63917 - CCS-COASTAL GATEWAY PGMNH - Announcement L15AS00117
Project Title:
CCS NLCS CALIFORNIA COASTAL NM GATEWAY
Description:
Key to the successful implementation of the California Coastal National Monument (CCNM), co-managed by five BLM field offices, is the establishment and initiation of a series of "Gateways" for the CCNM. One of these locations that have been identified to serve as a "CCNM Gateway" on the Monterey County coast. This project location must work with a local non-profit museum to create a sense of local "ownership" of the CCNM. Gateways serve as the main CCNM visitor locations. Funding would also support an annual interpretive event developed by BLM and hosted by the recipient. BLM would also participate in a Naturalist Certificate program with the recipient as well as a "Science Saturdays" program.
Geographic Description:
CENTRAL CALIFORNIA COAST, MONTEREY, CA
Benefits:
California Coastal National Monument, Hollister Field Office and recipient shall partner for this project which would underwrite the production of an interpretive exhibit and a collaborative partner participant in the California Coastal National Monument Monterey Gateway initiative. The recipient must have or has access to an extensive collection of artifacts and specimens that represent the biotic, abiotic, and cultural characteristics of the CCNM and the Hollister FO managed landscapes, and has expressed an interest in expanding its education focus on public lands. The recipient must have knowledge in the Monterey Bay region, which serves a local population of over 800,000, and regularly hosts school groups from San Benito, Santa Cruz, and Monterey Counties, with underserved population numbers varying between 25 and 60 per cent. BENEFITS: The establishment of a series of "Gateways" for the California Coastal National Monument (CCNM) is key to the successful implementation of the CCNM. It benefits not only the BLM but also the communities involved in each of the 12 CCNM gateway communities. Establishment of effective partnerships associated with each of the CCNM gateway initiatives will create long-term stewardship arrangements that are the core to the effective implementation of the CCNM.
Feasibility:
This initiative to create a partnership between the BLM and recipient is not only feasible but critical to the successful implementation of the CCNM. By partnering the BLM will be able to have a Gateway destination for the public and enhance community participation in the Monument. The recipient must be able to redesign or have permanent exhibit space and is interested in expanding their education programs, based on and drawn from the new/used exhibits. The opportunity to contribute to the design and development of the new exhibit would greatly expand the Hollister FO environmental education outreach to children and families, enhance the foundation of community relations with natural and cultural heritage partners, and stage opportunities for additional BLM outreach activities and resources, i.e. staff presentations and tours and specimen loans.
Support - Opposition:
There is strong support for a community oriented approach to the implementation of the CCNM.
