About this file

This soil report documents geoprobe and soil sampling services conducted at the Naval Submarine Base New London fuel farm in Groton, Connecticut. One soil boring was advanced to 15.75 feet below ground surface between the transformer and oil-water separator using a direct push drill rig. Two soil samples were collected at depths of 4 feet and 7.3 feet and submitted for analysis of extractable total petroleum hydrocarbons, semi-volatile organic compounds, and volatile organic compounds. Additionally, a groundwater sample was collected from a temporary monitoring well installed at the boring location and submitted for similar analysis. No diesel fuel constituents were detected above laboratory method reporting limits in any of the samples. Analytical results and the laboratory report are included as attachments.

The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Department of the Navy Naval Facilities Engineering Command for site development services at the Naval Submarine Base New London. No further details are provided on required products or services, response dates, award dates, pricing terms, or other salient information.

RE: Geoprobe and Soil Sampling Services Naval Submarine Base New London Fuel Farm

Groton, CT 06340 KEC Job #: 19(GP)104

Dear Ms. Silvestri, Kropp Environmental Contractors, Inc. (KEC) is pleased to present this letter report documenting Geoprobe and soil sampling services at the above referenced address in Groton Connecticut.

Summary of Field Investigations

On January 11, 2019, KEC advanced one (1) soil boring to 15.75 feet below ground surface (bgs) between the transformer and the oil-water separator (OWS) in the area referred to as the fuel farm, as directed by naval personnel, using a Geoprobe® model 7822DT direct push drill rig.

Two (2) soil samples were collected from the boring at depths of 4 feet bgs (Sample S-1) and 7.3 feet bgs (Sample S-2), respectively. The soil boring was converted into a 2-inch temporary groundwater monitoring well. Groundwater was encountered in the temporary well at around 7.3 feet bgs. KEC collected a grab groundwater sample from the well and submitted it, along with the two (2) soil samples, to Phoenix Environmental Laboratories, Inc. (Phoenix) in Manchester, Connecticut for analysis for extractable total petroleum hydrocarbons (ETPH) by the Connecticut ETPH Method. The groundwater sample was also analyzed for semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs] only) via Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8270 and Soil Sample S-2 was also analyzed for PAHs and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via EPA Method 8260.

No diesel fuel constituents were detected at concentrations above the laboratory method reporting limits (MRLs) in any of the samples. The analytical results are summarized in Table 1 and 2, and the laboratory report is presented in Attachment I.
