About this file

Franklin County Signage Standards Summary

This document is a comprehensive design and fabrication standards guide for signage developed by Franklin County, Ohio, in partnership with PLANIT Studios. The standards establish specifications for an extensive interior and exterior signage package across multiple Franklin County Government Center buildings located in Columbus, including the Franklin County Office Tower, Michael J. Dorrian Building, Court of Common Pleas, Franklin County Municipal Court, Juvenile Intervention Center, Franklin County Fulton Street Building, and two parking garages. The project encompasses numerous sign types organized into categories: exterior signage (on-building dimensional text, address panels, entrance pylons, and gateway pylons), parking garage signage (identification signs, directional signage, clearance bars, level identification, wall graphics, and flags), office/room identification signs (standard office signs, conference room sliders, directories, and directional signage), flag signs, restroom signage, life safety signage, and miscellaneous signage. The standards include detailed design intent drawings with precise dimensions, materials specifications, installation requirements, typography guidelines using Roboto and Arial fonts, and a color-coding system assigning specific Pantone colors to each building zone for visual cohesion across the campus.

The awarded sign contractor assumes full responsibility for final engineering, materials selection, sign fabrication, and installation in compliance with applicable state and federal building codes and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Contractors must conduct mandatory site walk-throughs prior to bidding, submit comprehensive message schedules with full-color proofs as electronic PDFs, obtain all required signage permits from local authorities, secure underground utility checks at contractor expense before ground sign installation, and provide one physical full-scale sample of each sign type for approval before fabrication proceeds. All signage materials must conform to specifications, with 3M, Avery, and Oracal vinyl required for graphic applications. Installation work includes a one-for-one removal of existing signage with wall and ceiling patch and repair work; contractors provide unit pricing for additional removals. The project will be managed through Sign Agent software, requiring contractors to maintain adequate licenses and electronic tablets for installation teams. All signage locations will be identified through floor plans and message schedules created in Sign Agent, with installed signs requiring photographic documentation submitted as comments in the system.
