About this file
This document is guidance provided by the General Services Administration on Military Standard 129 (Mil-Std-129R) marking and shipping label requirements for GSA vendor partners.
The guidance addresses marking requirements for unit packs, intermediate containers, and exterior containers. Unit and intermediate containers must include barcoded NSN numbers (with or without hyphens), cage codes, part numbers, nomenclature, quantity and unit of issue, contract or purchase order numbers, batch/lot numbers, shelf-life marking, TCN numbers when available, and if both contract and purchase order cannot fit, the purchase order number takes precedence. Exterior containers use the same basic format as unit containers but without item descriptions, and must additionally include barcoded NSN, purchase order number, and CAGE code. All identification text markings on unit packs and intermediate containers must include NSN/NATO stock number, CAGE code, part number, item description or nomenclature, quantity and UI, contract or purchase order number, military preservation method and date, shelf life, serial numbers, and hazardous materials information. Exterior container markings require NSN/NATO stock number, CAGE code, part number, item description or nomenclature, quantity and UI, contract or purchase order number, military preservation method, gross weight, proper shipping name and HAZMAT identification number, shelf life, serial numbers, and hazardous materials information. The document includes detailed guidance on Military Shipping Label (MSL) requirements, which must contain Transportation Control Number (TCN), Transportation Account Code/Postage, consignor information, type of service, priority, port of debarkation, project code, ultimate consignee address, weight, cube, charges, date shipped, FMS case number, piece number, and 2D bar code. Vendors are responsible for ensuring compliance with the most current version of Mil-Std-129R, and additional requirements apply for HAZMAT materials.
