About this file
This is a specifications section from bid documents for the Bakersfield National Cemetery Expansion project (Project No. 929CM003) detailing requirements for fabric skylights installation.
The contractor must furnish and install a PTFE-coated fiberglass translucent fabric skylight membrane system (Saint-Gobain SHEERFILL® Architectural Membranes or approved equal, specifically SHEERFILL II product) complete with perimeter attachment hardware and accessories. The membrane specifications include approximately 0.036-inch thickness, 12 percent light transmission, white color, and noncombustible fire performance suitable for permanent architectural structures. The system shall feature aluminum perimeter extrusion with reusable stainless-steel attachment hardware (reused only when deemed suitable by the Delegated Design Engineer). Design must be completed by a Professional Engineer licensed in California in accordance with the current California Building Code and ASCE 7, incorporating minimum basic wind speed of 95 mph, 3-second gust at Risk Category II, with provisions for seismic loads and rain loads that prevent ponding. The contractor must field-verify existing frame dimensions and attachment conditions prior to fabrication, as concealed deterioration or structural repairs exceeding those shown in contract documents shall be addressed by change order. Installation requires uniform membrane tensioning per an engineered tensioning plan, adherence to manufacturer written instructions, and inspection of all perimeter attachments and interfaces for watertightness upon completion. The contractor must provide a manufacturer's 20-year material warranty and installer's 2-year workmanship warranty, with the applicator responsible for protecting all work from damage during installation.

SECTION 10 73 13
FABRIC SKYLIGHTS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. Furnish and install PTFE-coated fiberglass translucent fabric skylight membrane system complete with perimeter attachment hardware and accessories.
1.2 REFERENCES
A. Applicable building code and manufacturer requirements.
1.3 SUBMITTALS
A. Provide product data, shop drawings, samples, and structural calculations stamped by a licensed engineer.
B. Provide delegated design calculations, membrane patterning, attachment details, tensioning requirements, and connection design.
1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Delegated Design:
Design fabric membrane system, attachments, and connections by a
Professional Engineer licensed in the State of California.
B. Design Loads:
Design membrane system in accordance with the currently adopted
California Building Code and ASCE 7.
1. Basic Wind Speed (Vult): 95 mph minimum, 3-second gust, Risk
Category II.
2. Exposure Category: As determined by the Delegated Design Engineer based upon actual project site conditions.
3. Rain Loads: Design membrane shape, pretension, and support system to prevent ponding and resist code-required rain loads.
4. Seismic Loads: Provide design in accordance with applicable CBC and
ASCE 7 requirements.
C. Membrane Performance:
1. Fabric shall remain stable under design loads without excessive flutter, wrinkling, or ponding.
2. Attachment system shall accommodate thermal movement and required membrane pretension.
3. Completed installation shall provide a watertight skylight system.
D. Existing Conditions:
Project No. 929CM003 June 30, 2026
09 97 24 - 2
1. Contractor shall field verify dimensions and attachment conditions prior to fabrication.
2. Existing frame, attachments, and connection conditions are partially concealed.
3. Concealed deterioration, corrosion, damaged hardware, deficient welds, or structural repairs not reasonably visible before membrane removal and exceeding the repairs shown on the Contract Documents shall be reported to the Architect and addressed by Change Order.
2.1 MANUFACTURES
A. Saint-Gobain SHEERFILL® Architectural Membranes or approved equal.
2.2 MATERIALS
A. Membrane: PTFE-coated woven fiberglass fabric.
B. Product: SHEERFILL II.
C. Thickness: Approximately 0.036 inch (0.9 mm).
D. Light transmission: Approximately 12 percent.
E. Color: White.
F. Fire performance: Noncombustible membrane suitable for permanent architectural structures.
2.3 ACCESSORIES
A. Aluminum perimeter extrusion system.
B. Reuse the stainless-steel attachment hardware.
C. C. Existing stainless steel attachment hardware may be reused only when determined suitable by the Delegated Design Engineer. Replace damaged, corroded, missing, or unsuitable components.
PART 3 – EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. All surfaces shall be dry and free from excess dirt, dust, loose paint, greasy stains and efflorescence. All cracks, voids, bee holes, or mortar shrinkage shall be properly repaired and primed if necessary to make the surface uniform as recommended by the product manufacturer.
B. Verify supporting steel structure is complete and ready to receive membrane system.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Install membrane in accordance with manufacturer written instructions.
B. Tension membrane uniformly.
C. Secure membrane in perimeter clamping assemblies.
D. Field measure existing frame prior to fabrication.
