Answers to RFI’s
1. Spec Section 01 35 26- Where is the closest window to exhaust HEPA air machines to the exterior of the building? The are no windows.
a. Or what is other options? However, the contractor can connect the exhaust HEPA air machines to the bathroom exhaust in rooms B 024F and B0221.
2. Spec Section 02 41 00- Is there a freight elevator close by to transport demolition debris? I do not see one on the drawings. Elevator F-11 located at the west end of Corridor CC01B.
3. Spec Section 02 41 00- Where will the debris dumpsters be located?
Loading Dock area west-northwest of 1st Floor Service Area C124, west of Elevator F-11.
4. Spec Section 02 41 00- Are there any load bearing CMU walls scheduled to be removed? They look like drywall in the pictures. Based on the A/E visual surveys of the space, there does not appear to be any load bearing CMU walls within the GU Clinic.
5. Spec Section 22 13 00- Drawings are missing the sanitary waste system, where are the existing sanitary waste lines? The basement "vent and waste plans" show a vent, NO sanitary waste. The Basement "crawl space" has all of the sanitary piping. Space is approximately 10 feet tall.
6. Spec Section 22 13 00- Where is the existing sanitary located in the crawl space? All over the crawl space but the new layout should easily connect to existing. Most of the small branch lines run near top of space, mains are located approximately 3 feet from floor, about 6 feet from ceiling.
7. Spec Section 22 13 00- What is the size of the existing waste lines? The main sanitary branch is 6" but most sanitary lines are 4".
8. Spec Section 22 13 00- Where are we to disconnect and reconnect to the waste line? The diagram plan is of no help for that either. The connection and disconnection points will be in the crawl space. The existing sanitary mains run throughout the space directly under the clinic with slope traveling from East to West.
9. Spec Section 22 13 00- What is the existing material for the existing sanitary, vent, and water piping? The sanitary piping system is consists of PVC for branch lines and Cast Iron for mains. Water Piping is copper. Vent piping is PVC.
a. Service weight soil pipe, PVC, copper, galvanized? The sanitary piping system is consists of PVC for branch lines and Cast Iron for mains.

a. Are we dealing with walking room, or is it literally a crawl area? Most is walkable but some low pipes cross overhead.
11. The basement “vent and waste plan” shows a vent, NO sanitary waste, the sanitary waste system is missing from plumbing drawings. Can you provide drawings specifying the location and size of the existing sanitary waste system in the crawl space? See drawing PD 100 P1.
a. What is the size of the crawls space, how much vertical space is there? Approximately 10 feet tall but there are pipes that run through at different elevations that will require some navigation. Most is walkable but some low pipes cross overhead.
12. Please provide specific location for where the disconnection and new connection should be made? See drawing PD 100 P1.
13. What material is the existing sanitary waste system, vent, and water piping made from? The sanitary piping system is consists of PVC for branch lines and Cast Iron for mains. Water Piping is copper. Vent piping is PVC.
14. Disconnection of any gas, compressed air, oxygen, med gas, vacuum, nitrogen, etc, piping systems falls under the jurisdiction of the mechanical contractor and should be reflected on the mechanical drawings. Plans indicate medical gas and vacuum piping on plumbing plans. Mechanical contractor shall utilize those plans for work scope.
15. Note 12 on E001 states to "Provide an insulated ground wire with all circuits" The "Branch Circuit Notes" only show (1) one ground with each network, not one per circuit. Please confirm if we are to furnish and install a dedicated ground per circuit or one ground per "homerun" or "network". Typically, we install (1) one ground per network on Hines Campus. It’s acceptable to run a ground per network.
16. Note 3 on TN 101 P1 states "All voice data cables shall be installed in conduit. All conduit shall terminate at existing telecommunication closet BO37A, coordinate with VA telecommunication for exact IT closet prior to any rough-ins." Note 9 ALSO states "Provide a 1" conduit from each tele/data JB up to the nearest accessible corridor ceiling space. Please advise whether it is acceptable to install voice and data with free air cabling to the nearest accessible ceiling space. Typically, the voice/data cabling is free air, in accessible ceilings, on Hines campus. All Voice/Data conduit shall stub-out of the clinic area with bushings at end of conduit. Voice/Data cabling can run free air in accessible ceiling in corridor back to IT closet.
17. Warranty: Part 1.10 states “The Contractor shall warrant the installation to be free from defect in material and workmanship for a period of two (2) years from the date of acceptance of the project by the owner.” and Part 4.3 B-1 states “The Contractor shall warranty that all provided material and equipment will be free from defects, workmanship and will remain so for a period of one year from date of final acceptance of the System by the VA.”. Can the government confirm that the warranty statement in Part 1.10 is referring to the installation only and Part 4.2 B-1 is referring to the material and equipment? Part 1.10 refers to the installation and Part 4.2 B-1 refers to the actual material and equipment itself.
18. The design documents show Med-gas work on the plumbing plans, but they do not include the medical gas piping or pipe sizes; we need this information in order to complete this work. O2 lines throughout will be 1/2", Med Air Piping will have 3/4" main and 1/2" on branchlines feeding the outlets. Vacuum will be 2" throughout.
19. With regards to the Med-gas work, we also need revised drawings showing where we will connect the new to or we need the existing sheets showing where the piping runs in this area; please clarify. Existing piping layout is unknown. There are no plans available. New work shall utilize the existing zone valve boxes as starting point for main connection.
20. On the plumbing plans there isn’t any information/drawings showing the sanitary sewer existing nor new work that is required for this project; please clarify. See plan PD 100 P1 for existing line locations and sizing.
21. Also, they show the vent piping on the basement plans but no sanitary sewer piping information; we need all of the existing sanitary piping shown on the drawings and the new piping and sizes for our plumbers to complete this work. See plan PD 100 P1 for existing line locations and sizing.
22. If any sanitary work is to be completed in the crawlspace area, we will need the vertical height dimensions of that space. Height of space is approximately 10'-0"
23. Also, for clarification the mechanical piping contractor needs the gas piping, compressed air work, oxygen piping, med-gas, vacuum piping, etc. for the medical piping/equipment work; by jurisdiction this is the responsibility of the mechanical piping subcontractor, not the plumber. O2 lines throughout will be 1/2", Med Air Piping will have 3/4" main and 1/2" on branchlines feeding the outlets. Vacuum will be 2" throughout.
24. In the S.O.W. #1, Constraints, Item #5: Buy American. Is this a requirement or is it a goal for this project? Yes, it is a requirement.
a. If it is a requirement; what is the procedure if the product listed is not manufactured in America? There is a process for granting exceptions spelled out in the VA Acquisition Manual (Part M825.2 Buy American Act - Construction Materials) that need to be coordinated with the COR.
25. Existing Responder 3 head-end is located in Storage B026 – Demolition drawings do not indicate changes to this room (Sterile Supply B023D). In lieu of installing a new nurse call head-end cabinet in Electrical Room B037A, can prime contractor re-use the existing nurse call cabinet, and expand on the existing Responder 5 nurse call cabinet/head-end servicing the Pacemaker Clinic across the hall. No.
26. Which material and what depth? the dimensional letters, the specs say acrylic; the drawings say brushed aluminum letters; neither give a depth. 1/8" thick brushed aluminum letters.
27. Are both sets of letters to be the same height? Yes.
a. AE201 specifically says 4” tall; AE522 no note, but scales to between 2 and 3 inches tall; AI 102 finish plan note 7 for both? AE 201 & AE 522 both shall be the same height of 4". Note 7 for both is correct.
28. Please confirm the medical gas piping sizes for this project. O2 lines throughout will be 1/2", Med Air Piping will have 3/4" main and 1/2" on branchlines feeding the outlets. Vacuum will be 2" throughout.
a. Can prime contractor receive medical gas as built drawings to accurately price tie in sizes. As-built drawings were not located, and existing conditions are not known.
29. Know what the Wood Door Veneer should be (ie, Oak, Maple, Birch, Cherry etc) for these doors the Wood Door Specs do not say anything. Pricing varies, depending on the veneer that is wanted. The doors should be plain-sliced maple, stained to match PL-1.
30. Can you clarify which note is correct. Note 3 on TN 101 P1 calls for complete conduit system back for all data. And Note 9 on sheet TN101 calls out that you can take stubs for Voice/data system to the nearest accessible ceiling. We want to clarify which note is correct. All Voice/Data conduit shall stub-out of the clinic area with bushings at end of conduit. Voice/Data cabling can run free air in accessible ceiling in corridor back to IT closet.
31. Please confirm the medical gas piping sizes for this project. Can prime contractor receive medical gas as built drawings to accurately price tie in sizes. O2 lines throughout will be 1/2", Med Air Piping will have 3/4" main and 1/2" on branchlines feeding the outlets. Vacuum will be 2" throughout.
