About this file
This file is a comprehensive set of Requests for Information (RFI) responses related to elevator modernization work at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center across six buildings (1, 2, 5, 38, 135, and 137). The RFI responses address 234 questions spanning multiple disciplines including controls integration, mechanical systems, electrical coordination, fire alarm interfaces, infection control requirements, building automation systems, and construction logistics.
Key project parameters include: elevator modernization (not new installation) with existing equipment being replaced in-place; phased construction with only one elevator per bank permitted to be non-operational at a time, though elevators in separate buildings may be worked on simultaneously; three separate construction crews anticipated working concurrently; 608 calendar days from Notice to Proceed including submittal and fabrication phases; and Class 3 Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) requirements in all buildings. Critical coordination points include: Johnson Controls as the controls integration contractor (Metasys), fire alarm contractor (Simplex 4120 system), and security contractor; all new fire alarm devices must integrate with existing Simplex system; emergency power required for elevators in all buildings with specific ATS and generator configurations provided for each building; and HVAC cooling designed to support new elevator equipment loads with BAS monitoring of machine room temperatures and sump pump alarms. The contractor must provide a full-time superintendent and full-time QA/QC manager (which may dual-hat as ILSM/Infection Control Officer or Elevator Coordination Lead) with named individuals requiring COR approval, maintain daily documentation of Safety/ILSM/ICRA/QA/QC functions, coordinate with existing utility contractors, follow ASME A17.1 2022 code, and complete all manufacturer testing prior to third-party inspector Category 5 testing and VA Fire Marshal coordination.
