About this file
This is a specification document for safety switches required for the Volusia County Branch Jail facility located at 1300 Red John Drive, Daytona Beach, Florida, as part of a comprehensive air handler and fire suppression system replacement and upgrade project. The specification outlines requirements for quick-make, quick-break, NEMA heavy-duty type safety switches to be installed for branch circuits and general use throughout the facility. Switches must be fused or non-fused as indicated on drawings, with fully visible switch blades in the off position and mechanical lugs sized for copper or aluminum conductors. Acceptable manufacturers are Square D, Eaton, ITE, and Siemens, and all switches must be coordinated with other distribution equipment from the same manufacturer.
Installation requirements mandate that safety switches be located with proper clearance and access in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), with motor disconnect switches rated by horsepower and non-motor load switches sized according to equipment full-load current. Switches must be mounted in NEMA 1 enclosures under standard conditions or NEMA 3R steel enclosures for moisture-prone areas and outdoor installations. All switches require mounting at 60 inches above finished floor to the top of the enclosure unless otherwise specified, with Class R fuses and rejection clips required for elevator motor connections. Permanent identification labels must be provided for all safety switches, and roof-mounted disconnects and safety switches require permanent printed ampacity rating labels on the inside cover per Brevard County requirements. Adequate support must be provided for mounting, and switches shall not be mounted directly to the equipment they serve.
