About this file

This is a Design Criteria and Facility Standards Manual document issued by the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) establishing lighting standards for exterior fixtures on campus buildings and sites, effective January 1, 2020. The standards apply to all new building designs and renovation work involving the installation or relocation of lighting fixtures comprising at least 50% of the lighting within a renovated space. The document specifies that outdoor pole lights shall use a 5-inch straight round pole with 30-foot mounting height (Altitude 3 Fixture by Kim Lighting) and establishes comprehensive technical requirements for exterior LED fixtures, including minimum L70 lumen maintenance at 50,000 hours, 3000K color temperature, Color Rendition Index of 70 or higher, and a B.U.G. Rating of B5-U0-G3 with 387 watts and 44,000 lumens output in a Type 5 Square Medium distribution pattern. Any deviations or exceptions require prior written approval from the Director of the Operations and Maintenance Department in Facilities Management Electrical Systems Section.

The standards incorporate applicable codes and guidelines including IEC 2015, ASHRAE 90.1-2013, IBC 2015, IRC 2015, IECC 2015, IGCC 2015, and IESNA Standards, with modifications as specified by the Department of Housing and Community Development. Lighting levels shall be measured according to IESNA handbook specifications with point-by-point photometric calculations required for exterior systems. Controls must include central photocell operation with 7-day/24-hour time clock and Hand-Off-Auto switching capabilities. All wiring, fixture mounting, grounding, and bonding shall comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC), and junction boxes must be labeled with circuit number, power panel number, and room number information. These standards ensure consistency and compliance across all campus lighting installations and modifications.

Design Criteria/Facility Standards Manual Page 1 University of Maryland, College Park

Description:

The purpose of the section is to highlight the current applicable UMD Design Standards for the design, selection and installation lighting fixtures located on the exterior of buildings, the project site and, the surrounding campus arena.

Related Sections:

• 26 51 00 Lighting-Interior

Effective Date:

January 1, 2020

Applicable Standards:

• IEC 2015 – ASHRAE 90.1 – 2013

• IBC 2015 w/ the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) modifications (Ref: COMAR

05.02.07)

• IRC 2015 w/ the DHCD modifications

• IECC 2015 & IGCC 2015

• Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) Standards

General Requirements:

The application of this section applies to all interior and exterior lighting in “new building” designs. This section also applies to “renovation work” within existing buildings--if the installation of new light fixtures, or the relocation of existing light fixtures is a part of the renovation, and the lighting work involves at least 50% of the lighting within the renovated space. Any deviation or exception to the requirements of this section requires the prior written approval of the Director of the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Department in Facilities Management Electrical Systems Section, as well as notification to the Electrical Systems Section within O&M.

Light Fixture Recommendations/Guidelines

• Outdoor

• UMD standard for outdoor pole lights shall be a 5” straight round pole with 30’ mounting height. Basis of design; Altitude 3 Fixture by Kim Lighting. Base plate to match application (i.e. New Build or Retrofit).

• Lamp Specifications
