CDC Business Overview

About CDC The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention awards nearly 85 percent of its budget through grants and contracts to help accomplish its mission to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S.

Contracts procure goods and services used directly by the agency, and grants go to other health-related and research organizations that contribute to CDC’s mission through health information dissemination, preparedness, prevention, research, and surveillance. Contracts are generally awarded to for-profit organizations & grants are generally awarded to non-profit or not-for-profit organizations.

Each year, the CDC awards approximately $11 billion in over 24,000 separate grant and contract actions, including simplified acquisitions. Approximately $6 billion is awarded in contract dollars & $5 billion is awarded in grant dollars. Typical awardees of contract dollars at CDC are vaccine manufacturers, corporations providing lab supplies, lab equipment, IT supplies, IT equipment, and staffing.
