About this file
This file contains interior inspection reports for two 2-million gallon above-ground concrete digesters owned by the Kenton County Airport Board at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) in Hebron, Kentucky. The reports document inspection and repair activities conducted between August 2023 and September 2025 by NACE Certified Coating Inspector Gregory Charles Hardig Sr. Digester #1 underwent initial interior inspection on August 4, 2023, involving grout application, sand broadcasting, and application of a 60-mil coating using a surface conditioner and ceramic-impregnated mortar (CIM). Subsequently, on September 8-10, 2025, Digester #1 required interior wall crack repair after CVG work crew identified an open and spalled vertical crack on the east-north-east side of the tank. The inspection revealed heavily corroded soft steel within a 10-12 inch wide by 10-foot tall crack located over a lap joint, along with deteriorated duct tape. Digester #2 required two separate repair efforts: a temporary wall cap crack repair on October 27, 2023, using polysulfide elastomeric sealant, and a more comprehensive wall and cap crack repair with waterproofing conducted June 18-20, 2024, involving abrasive blasting, diamond wheel grinding, primer application, and CIM 1000 pre-mix waterproofing application.
All repair work was performed to specification according to the inspecting engineer's recommendations, with materials including CIM trowel grade, EMT epoxy primer, crack filler, and waterproofing coatings. Batch numbers were recorded for quality control purposes, and work included scaffolding installation for safe interior access. The reports note attention to detail in sealed holes in the cap and crack areas near ladder access points. These inspection reports serve as supporting documentation for the Kenton County Airport Board's Tank Inspections & Repairs & On-Call Services contract opportunity, with bids due May 21, 2026, at 2:00 pm, and questions due by May 11, 2026, at 11:59 pm.

General:
The plan for the day is to inspect the General condition of the #1 Digester 2-Mil Above-ground tank Interior.
With JSA and a meaningful discussion on safety complete, we are using a 5x gas air monitor to find the tank safe for entry.
The workers mixed the grout poured it out and then troweled it evenly onto the surface. They then broadcast sand into the top to aid in the adhesion of the CIM.
Workers mixed the CIM and first applied the surface conditioner, then poured out and using a notched squeegee applied the 60/mil coating.
It is noted that there was some slight outgassing, but it will not effect the abrasion resistance service.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
Respectfully submitted.

The plan for Digester #1 2-Mil Above-ground tank it to repair the open and spalled vertical wall crack noticed by CVG work crew.
With JSA and a meaningful discussion on safety complete, the crew began lowering scaffolding down into the tank. Two towers were setup.
Kenton County Airport Board 2-Mil Above-ground Digester # 1 Interior Wall crack Repair Inspection Report 9-8-2025
We made safe entry and walked to parameter visually inspecting the walls for cracks.
The crack was swelling and raised from the rest of the surface of the interior wall on the east-north-east side of the tank
Scaffolding was built

We sounded it first with a hammer and then a chain. It appears to be about 10 to 12“ wide and about 10’ tall.
We put a pry bar in the center, and the surface concrete easily gave way. This the right side of the soft steel.

The steel was heavily corroded and not adhered to the exterior concrete.
The center of the crack is over a lap joint in the steel.
We pealed the loose lap steel and behind it was duct tape.

September 10-2025 We consulted the material supplier technical rep. He recommended that we cut out the loose corroded steel.
Abrasive blast the steel and surrounding, then contour and base fill the edges using 615CF crack filler.
Apply the EMT primer to the cement. Finish the repair with two lifts 70 to 80 mils each CIM Trowel grade.
