1. The Government’s general and specific requirements for the Pony Express (XP) Trail Bridge project are as follows:
A. Fabricate, construct and install four trail bridges of varying lengths on the Pony Express trail between Kyburz and Echo Summit.
B. Remove logs (if any) that served as waterway crossings at the trail bridge sites.
C. For all four trail bridges (Clubhouse, Fred's Place, Aspen, Huckleberry), the design is determined by the Forest Service standard trail bridge design for a wooden major trail bridge applicable to the appropriate length. See attachment 1 for standard bridge plans.
1. Minimum dimensions for all trail bridges are: 72” width between top railing which shall be no less than 42” above top of deck. The maximum opening of side railings shall be 8”.
D. Contracting Officer Representative (COR) will verify location of each trail bridge, staging area and the best route between the two with the Contractor. Two bridge sites (Fred’s Place, Aspen) are located within 150’ of a dirt road or staging area. Two bridge sites (Clubhouse, Huckleberry) are located 2/3 mile and 1/2 mile respectfully from the work site’s staging areas.
E. Contractor shall supply and install all dimensional lumber, concrete, associated hardware and appurtenances, as shown in the drawings. Contractor is responsible for verifying correct length of each trail bridge prior to fabrication.
F. Construction of the bridge’s footings/foundation shall have been completed at least three weeks before attachment and installation of the superstructure implemented to allow concrete to cure and harden. Previous bridge footings left in place post-fire are not the correct dimension of the new footings but can be incorporated into the construction of the new footings.
2. Location and mileage from Silver Fork Store in Kyburz, CA:
• To Huckleberry trail bridge-travel east on Hwy. 50 17.8 miles, turn right on Scout Peak Road (FS 11NY06), travel 0.9 miles to the first sharp left-hand turn. The Pony Express trail veers off to the right. Travel on the XP trail for 0.45 miles to the trail bridge site.
• To Aspen trail bridge-travel east on Hwy. 50 15.8 miles, turn right on Sierra at Tahoe Road, travel 1.1 miles and before crossing Aspen Creek is a parking area on the right.
It is 0.1 miles on the XP trail from the parking area to the trail bridge site.
• To Fred’s Place trail bridge-travel east on Hwy. 50 4.7 miles, there is a large turnout on the north side of Hwy. 50. A gated dirt road runs up and swings to the left. After 0.15 mile, the dirt road ends within 100 feet of the trail bridge site.
• To Clubhouse trail bridge-travel east on Hwy. 50 1.6 miles to the old Kyburz dump road (FS 11N43), turn left and travel 0.15 miles to the XP trail, which is on the right. It is 0.67 miles to the trail bridge site.
