A new water tank and foundation will be installed to provide water to the existing comfort station on site and an existing campground off site. Existing outdoor overlook will be repaired and expanded to improve visitor experience at the site. Repairs include (but are not limited to) restoration of a historic stone wall with existing stone that collapsed during the volcanic event, expansion of the overlook footprint area, and the addition of new seat benches utilizing salvaged stone from the building demolition. The existing comfort station will have a portion of the utilities replaced to maintain service after the other buildings are removed.
2. The improvement of the park entrance road and Crater Rim Drive and removal of the adjacent ‘T’-intersection to improve vehicle circulation and visitor safety.
HAVO - 305150, 318523, 315026, 250523, 254676, 196582, 258076 01 11 00 - 2
a. The existing ‘T’ intersection at the south side of the entrance station will be removed and a single lane roundabout will be constructed. A portion of Crater Rim Drive will be realigned to meet the new roundabout, and a new entry point will be created that connects to the existing parking area for the visitor center. The section of Crater Rim Drive to be removed will have the road base removed and topsoil restored in preparation for park staff to revegetate.
b. The entrance road will be widened with the addition of an administrative bypass lane entering the park and a formal pull-off exiting the park. Staff parking at the entrance station will be relocated.
c. Overhead Hawaiian Telcom and Spectrum lines will be relocated. Contractor shall coordinate all costs with the service provider.
d. The existing generator at the entrance station will be replaced.
3. The replacement of water distribution system.
a. Abandon in place or remove approximately 4,100 lineal feet of existing 1”, 6” and 8” buried and above ground steel and copper pipe with valves, pipe supports and appurtenances. The existing pipe will be replaced with approximately 4,590 lineal feet of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), ductile iron and fittings, copper pipe and service hose varying in diameter from 1”, 2”, 4”, 6” and 8”, with valves, concrete blocks, restraints, and appurtenances. Approximately 2,525 lineal feet is constructed above ground, and approximately 2,065 lineal feet is buried as shown in the 124- 145330 Drawings.
4. The replacement of fiber optic lines. Project limits are between the Cell Tower to just pass Building 310,Visitor Emergency Operations Center (VEOC) including service laterals and building connections for the Administrative Buildings, Housing area and the Entrance Fee Booth.
a. The project will replace approximately 8,710 feet of damaged and vulnerable fiber optic line serving the park’s administrative buildings with new fiber optic line in fiberglass conduit, except as noted. The proposed backbone fiber optic will be aboveground and supported on precast concrete blocks or tube supports, except at roadway and walkway crossings or in public areas where it will be buried and encased concrete. The proposed fiber optic system includes all necessary junction boxes, handholes, patch panels, blackboards and associated appurtenances needed to provide fiber optic service to the park’s administrative buildings. Approximately 4,300 linear feet is buried and 4,410 linear feet will be installed aboveground, as shown in the 124-175265 Drawings. The existing fiber optic system will be abandoned in place, except as noted.
