1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
1.1 A-FRAME The A-Frame is a steel weldment designed for service in a marine environment. The A-Frame is designed for the following requirements:
• Lifting capacity of 910 KG in 4.0 M waves and 35 knot winds.
• Towing capacity of 13.25 kN at angles of up to 45° from vertical including all loads induced from vessel motions.
• Design loads (both lifting and towing) can be applied to either of the two A-Frame pade-eye locations, but not simultaneously.
• Operation from the fully retracted inboard position to the fully extended outboard position with the rated lifting capacity in 30 seconds.
The A-Frame is designed in accordance with the American Bureau of Shipping “Guide for Lifting Appliances, Guide for Certification of Cranes”. The hydraulic components are designed in accordance with the U.S. Coast Guard guidelines for “failsafe” operation (i.e. all functions will cease and hold in the event of hydraulic or electric power failure). The total approximate A-Frame weight is 16,700 pounds.
Operation of the A-Frame consists of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic components. This technical manual only covers the A-Frame and hydraulic cylinders. All other components whether hydraulic or electrical are supplied by others.
1.2 A-FRAME STURCTURE The A-Frame structure is a weldment fabricated from high strength steel plate and pipe. The A-Frame structure consists of the cross beam, two legs, two bases and four stop tubes. The legs provide a bolting connection for the cross beam. They also provide anchor points for the cylinder and base. The base is designed to be welded to the ship’s structure. The cross beam provides two padeyes which are supplied with anchor shackles for attachment of customer supplied snatch blocks.
1.3 CYLINDERS Moving the A-Frame from the fully retracted inboard position to the fully extended outboard position is accomplished by two 7 inch bore hydraulic cylinders.
The cylinders are equipped with heat-treated, chrome plated stainless steel rods and two integral cartridge type load holding valves. The load hold valves provide load control while retracting and extending the cylinders, and the ability to hold the load in the event of loss of hydraulic pressure. The A-Frame system is capable of operation from a fully retracted inboard position to the fully extended outboard position (70°) with the rated lifting capacity in 30 seconds.
