MP12028A0, SAL T Series ELC Datasheet

General Description The ELC controls the measurements. It contains two Independent units, one for speed through water measurement and one for speed over ground measurement.

Both measuring functions are based on the acoustic correlation principle. The basic concept is the measurement of the time delay between the characteristics of reflected sonic pattern sensed by the receivers. Echo signal modulation is used for speed estimation. The speed is estimated from the fix distance between sensor elements divided by the estimated time delay from correlation, where two signals are compared by shifting one relative to the other in time, and choosing the time shift where the maximum similarity is found.

The speed data calculated in the ELC is sent as serial IEC61162-1 / NMEA messages for further processing in the LPU or directly to any other user.

Serial Digital Displays

The display in the versatile SAL SD4 family is preliminary used for indication of speed, distance and depth. A Speed Log Master Display can also be used to remotely control such equipment, which is not easily accessible or has no user interface, for example a speed log or an interface cabinet.

(WT) for Speed Through the Water (STW) related information. The new performance standard IMO MSC.191(79) states that standardized terms and definitions shall be used. The SAL speed logs have historically used the terms Bottom Track (BT) for Speed Over the Ground (SOG) and Water Track.

Transducer

SAL TRU-2-2

The correlation speed log uses acoustic pulses in the water.

The transducer is mounted flush with the hull. Pulses are transmitted from the piezo-electric elements through the water, down to the sea-bed. The sea-bed reflects the signal back to the piezo-electric elements, which then act as receivers. The broad antenna lobes improves the performance at heavy sea.

The transducer is designed to be fitted flush with the hull, along the longitudinal axis of the hull. It measures the SOG (true speed) of the ship relative to the sea bed and the STW (relative speed) will be measured in the water mass approximately 130 mm below the ship’s hull.

MP12026A0, SAL LPU2 Datasheet

Log Processing Unit

LPU2

Part no: 704500

The SAL LPU2 is normally mounted on the wheelhouse area and receives the NMEA message from the ELC. The LPU2 has various options to perform message conversion and calculations and has also variety of inputs for receiving data from other units e.g. rate of turn gyro for docking functionality. Various outputs are available for external users, such as autopilot, radar, AIS, VDR, fin stabilizers, etc.

Redundancy relays ensure compulsory NMEA transmission in case of a power failure to the LPU2.

LED – error codes and a look-up task inside quickly guides the user to the errors. The same errors are automatically shown on the SAL SD4 Speed Log Master Display and the SAL ESD2 Echo Sounder Display.
