About this file

This document is a Trail Bridge Inspection Report for the HRWAT #5 bridge, located in the White Mountain National Forest, Androscoggin Ranger District. The bridge is classified as a Complex Trail Bridge with a Trail Class 3, designed for Snow Cat use, spanning 24 feet with a 144-inch overall deck width. The main span is a steel deck girder with a spread footing substructure, and the deck is composed of untreated timber running planks.

The inspection, conducted on 9/28/2023 by Steve Wright, P.E., revealed several maintenance needs. The superstructure's steel stringers are in good condition with light rust, but the deck shows signs of wear, including broken/damaged boards in the northwest quadrant. Recommended tasks include adding object markers (high priority), replacing deck planks, installing timber curbs, attaching girders to sills, and building approaches. The bridge has a 24-month recommended inspection cycle, with estimated repair costs ranging from $13.80 to $678.88 per unit depending on the specific maintenance task. The bridge crosses a waterway with rocks and rapids, and the surrounding environment is a densely forested area with a dirt/rock trail approach.

Structure Remarks

Superstructure: Beams, H=16", Wf=5.5", Tf=3/8", Tw=1/4" (Either W16x31 or W16x26's). Girder spacing 33.5" oc. Steel stringers are still in good condition with light rust at the bearing points. Diaphragm spacing 8', diaphragms are still in good condition. Bridge is very low to water. No cabling on this one.

Deck: The 3x8 decking shows signs of ware and deterioration with the ends of several boards broken/damaged in the NW quadrant (likely damage from a snow machine). There are 4" spaces between deck boards. Vegetation encroaches on only one side. With no object markers, snowcat may tend to operate to the other side of the bridge, which might be why one deck plank is broken. Running planks have signs of scaring and ware, some are broken at the ends of the bridge. No approach spans or backer boards present, vertical step up to the bridge.
