About this file

This document is a Trail Bridge Inspection Report for the HRWAT #3 bridge located in the White Mountain National Forest, Androscoggin Ranger District. The bridge is a complex, single-span timber structure crossing a waterway, with a 34-foot overall length, 144-inch deck width, and designed for snow cat and hiking trail use. The inspection, conducted on 9/28/2023 by Steve Wright, P.E., reveals significant deterioration including rotting deck boards, undermining at the northwest quadrant, and overgrown approach areas.

Key maintenance tasks recommended include replacing the plank deck (204 square feet at $6.42/sq ft), repairing scour and undermining at the abutment ($1,629.20), adding safety signage, installing timber curbing, and performing basic maintenance across 1,500 square feet. The bridge's superstructure consists of 4 steel stringers with minor surface rust, and the deck shows approximately 1/4 of boards missing with heavy weathering. The inspection notes that additional work such as replacing the deck, improving approaches, and raising sills should be considered to enhance the bridge's long-term resilience.

Structure Remarks

Superstructure: There are 4 steel stringers: Tw=0.32, Tf=0.41, H=16”, Wf=5.6255”, likely W16x31 spaced at 37". Steel stringers are still in good condition with light rust. Bracing spaced 8’ oc, the center diaphragm has only a single bolt holding it in place. Sill is comprised of (5) 2x12s resting on ground.

Deck: 3x8 boards with 1 3/4" spacing between adjacent boards. The deck shows scaring and deterioration from years of use. Running plank c-c=60”.

Running planks broken, rotting and partially missing. The approach span in the NE is becoming overgrown and shows significant deterioration and rot.

Several deck boards are heavily rotted.

The scour and undermining in the NW quadrant of this bridge results in a NBI Rating of 3 from the previous inspection. This has been improved by adding rocks underneath the sill. Additional work such as replacing the deck, improving approaches, and raising the sills should be considered to make the bridge more resilient long term.
