About this file
This document is a Trail Bridge Inspection report for the HRWAT #2 bridge, located in the White Mountain National Forest, Androscoggin Ranger District. The bridge is a complex, single-span timber structure with steel superstructure, classified as a Trail Class 3 bridge designed for snow cat use. The inspection, conducted on 9/28/2023 by Steve Wright, P.E., reveals significant structural concerns including severe rust on steel stringers, multiple bends and deformations in girders, and a critically unstable foundation system comprising 8x10 timbers resting on stacked stones with severe undermining, especially at the east abutment.
The inspection report recommends several urgent repair tasks, including replacing girders (Task ID: TB-CPX-SUP-STL-02A), repairing the substructure (Task ID: TB-CPX-SUB-GEN-02A), installing timber curbs (Task ID: TB-CPX-CRB-TBR-02A), and performing basic maintenance and load rating. The bridge's overall condition is poor, with specific issues noted in the superstructure, deck, and foundation. The approach spans are 10' and 14' long, and the bridge has significant wear, rust, and structural integrity problems that require immediate attention to ensure safe usage.

Structure Remarks
Superstructure: Beams 42.5” c-c, H=21.25", Wf =8”, Tf=0.68, Tw=0.6” (most likely W21x68). Steel stringers have almost full surface rust with only paint on the webs left. The bottom flange of the southern most stringer (S1) has several bends in it. The second and third stringers from the south (S2 & S3) have a significant bow in their webs at the eastern supports. S3 has a large bend in the top flange approximately 2' from the west end and also above the second diaphragm from the west. S2 is twisted at the east end and bears only on less than an inch of flange (north edge) with a 1/2"+ gap between the abutment and bottom of flange at the south edge. Diaphragms have nearly full surface rust, numerous bends and twists, flange deformations and cracked and questionable welds at the ends with only a few inches at the center where support for LTB is low.
Deck: 6.3’ c-c running plank spacing, with heavy weathering and signs of wear from years of use. Approach spans 10’ and 14’.
Foundation: The current foundation system comprises of 8x10 timbers resting on stacked stones. There is severe undermining of the substructure around the stacked stones, especially at the east abutment. There are significant gaps underneath both abutments but there is no apparent settlement and the bridge isn't showing signs of serious distress. This is a critical finding, due to the inherant instability.
