About this file
This document is a Trail Bridge Inspection report for the HRWAT #1 bridge located in the White Mountain National Forest, Androscoggin Ranger District. The bridge is a complex, single-span timber trail bridge with a deck girder structure, designed for snow cat use on Trail #31393-0.1200. The overall bridge length is 37 feet, with an overall deck width of 144 inches and steel main span stringers. The inspection, conducted on 9/28/2023 by Steve Wright, P.E., reveals the bridge is in fair to poor condition, with specific issues including wide deck plank spacing, approach spans in poor condition, and light to moderate deterioration of timber decking and running boards.
Key recommendations include removing and replacing approach spans, considering deck and wearing surface replacement in the next several years, and addressing maintenance tasks such as repairing running planks, installing safety signage, and potential curb installation. The bridge crosses a rocky stream with good scour protection, and the surrounding environment is a dense forest with vegetation growing through the deck boards. The inspection suggests several specific maintenance tasks with associated costs, including approach fill repair ($678.88), running plank repair ($13.80 per square foot), and inspection of the deck girder ($1,725 per each).

Structure Remarks
Bridge substructure and superstructure are in fair condition. Very wide spacing on deck planks; 3x8's spaced at 10" O.C.. The approach spans are in poor condition with local failures and should be rebuilt longer. Diaphragms in good condition with 94" spacing with no end diaphragms. 36” girder spacing (likely W16x26), W beam H=16” Wf=5.5” Tf=3/8 Tw=1/4 23'-9" overall length. Light rust on the bottom of each stringer. Running plank 5’ c-c. Sills (5) 2x12s.
Timber decking and running boards have some light to moderate moss, heavy weathering, scaring, and general deterioration. Some sections of the running boards are missing. Some plant and tree growth through deck boards and the approach spans.
Recommendations to remove and replace approach spans. Consider replacing deck and wearing surface in the next several years.
