About this file

This is a technical specification document for stone masonry veneer installation as part of the AFD Visitor Center Remodel project in Missoula, Montana. The specification establishes requirements for anchored cut stone veneer at an exterior sign, including materials, installation standards, and quality control procedures. The acceptable manufacturer is Montana Rockworks (located in Kalispell, MT), providing thin natural stone veneers in Ledge cut style with Moose Mountain color and cut corner units. The specification mandates use of reinforcing materials complying with ASTM standards, including galvanized expanded metal lath options ranging from 2.5 to 3.4 pounds per square yard, welded wire lath, or woven wire mesh. Water-resistive barriers must comply with ASTM D226/D226M or ASTM E2556/E2556M standards.

The mortar system consists of three components: scratch coat mortars (ASTM C270 Type N or S), setting bed mortars for adhering veneer units, and pointing mortars for grout joints, all requiring Portland cement, lime, and sand compliant with applicable ASTM standards. Installation must follow the Masonry Veneer Manufacturers Association Installation Guide and local building codes, with surfaces requiring structural soundness, cleanliness, and proper curing. A 10-foot by 10-foot mock-up incorporating stone anchors, corners, and control joints must be constructed and located as indicated on drawings. Cleaning procedures specify mild detergent application after 36 hours using soft bristle brushes, with prohibition on acid or metal brushes. The specification references Section 01 3000 for submittal procedures and Section 01 6000 for product substitution requirements.

C. Mortar:

1. Cement: Portland cement complying with ASTM C 1329.

2. Lime: ASTM C 207.

3. Sand: ASTM C 144, natural or manufactured sand.

4. Color Pigment: ASTM C 979, mineral oxide pigments.

5. Water: Potable.

6. Pre-Packaged Latex-Portland Cement Mortar: ANSI A118.4.

2.03 MORTAR MIXES

A. Scratch Coat Mortars – Scratch coat mortars are applied directly to the lath or substrate to which AMSV systems are adhered. As the name implies, this first layer of mortar is intentionally scratched or roughened before hardening to provide enhanced mechanical bond between the scratch coat and setting bed mortars. Recommendations for the scratch coat mortar are as follows:

1. Site Mixed: Meets the requirements of ASTM C270 Type N or Type S.

2. Preblended: Meets the requirements of ASTM C1714/C1714M Type N or Type S.

B. Setting Bed Mortars – After the scratch coat mortar has cured sufficiently, the setting bed mortar is used to adhere the AMSV units to the backing. The setting bed mortar is applied directly to the scratch coat or to the back of the AMSV units (back-buttering), or a combination of both application methods. Recommendations for setting bed mortars based on specific applications are described as follows in Table 2.

C. Pointing Mortars – Pointing mortars, also referred to as grouting mortars or mortar used to grout mortar joints, are used to fill the joints between individual AMSV units once the setting bed mortar has sufficiently cured. Not all AMSV systems incorporated mortar between the units, while others allow the distance between units to be varied to create alternative architectural finishes. Recommendations for the pointing mortar are as follows:

1. Site Mixed: Meets the requirements of ASTM C270 Type N or Type S.

2. Preblended: Meets the requirements of ASTM C1714/C1714M Type N or Type S.

2.04 ACCESSORIES - ADHERED VENEER

A. Approved lath options include:

1. 2.5 lb/yd2 (1.4 kg/m2) (or heavier) self-furring metal lath meeting ASTM C847.

2. 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) rib (high rib), 3.4 lb/yd2 (1.8 kg/m2) (or heavier), self-furring metal lath meeting ASTM C847.

3. Welded wire lath complying with ASTM C933.

4. 18 gauge (or heavier) woven wire lath meeting ASTM C1032.

5. Non-metallic lath complying with ASTM C1788.

6. Alternate lath products showing compliance with ICC-ES AC 275, or equivalent.

B. Water-Resistive Barrier: ASTM D226/D226M or ASTM E2556/E2556M.

C. Weep Screeds and Casing Beads:

1. Weep screeds and casing beads must be corrosion resistant, with weep screeds having a minimum vertical attachment flange of 3.5 inches (89 mm) that terminates behind the water resistive barrier (if present). The minimum thickness of metal weep screeds and casing beads should not be less than 0.0179 inches (0.45 mm) (26 gage). For plastic weep screeds or casing beads, the minimum thickness is 0.050 inches (1.3 mm).

D. Flashing:

1. All flashing and flashing accessories must be corrosion resistant and integrated with the WRB materials (if present). For exterior applications, flashing must be installed at all through-wall penetrations and at lower boundaries of AMSV installations. Flashing is not required for interior applications of AMSV systems not exposed to water. For interior applications that are exposed to water, treat as an exterior assembly.

2. In some applications, the use of self-adhering flashing, also known as flashing tape, can be used. It is recommended that applicable building codes as well as manufacturer's instructions are reviewed and followed to ensure they are permissible for the given project or application. Additionally, the manufacturer of the AMSV should be contacted prior to construction to ensure the compatibility of the two products.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 INSTALLATION

A. Install stone thin veneers in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions and recommendations.

1. For Field Applications: Install according to the Masonry Veneer Manufacturers Association Installation Guide for Adhered Masonry Veneer and local building codes.

B. Assembly:

1. Units shall be mixed from several boxes at a time to insure proper color blending; includes flats and corners.

2. Surfaces for application shall be structurally sound, clean, dry and free from contaminants that would prevent a good bond. Newly prepared concrete shall be cured for 28 days and then troweled smooth and textured to a fine broom finish. Existing surfaces shall be scarified and leveled, and all defects shall be repaired. Glossy or painted surfaces shall be sanded, stripped and cleaned of waxes, dirt and other contaminants.

3. Installation shall comply with the requirements of all applicable local, state and federal code jurisdictions. Stone panels shall only be applied to structurally sound surfaces incorporating good building practices.

4. Cementitious Surfaces: Concrete or plaster shall be fully cured and shall accept water penetration. Test by sprinkling water on various areas of the substrate. If water penetrates, a good bond may be achieved; if water beads, surface contaminants are present, and loss of adhesion may occur. Contaminants shall be mechanically removed before installation. Concrete shall be free of efflorescence and not subject to hydrostatic pressure.

5. Plywood Substrates: Plywood substrates shall be structurally sound and shall meet all local building codes and ANSI deflection requirements.

6. General waterproof membrane (ANSI 118.10): Follow the waterproof membrane manufacturer's recommendations.

7. Setting Material: Use a pre-blended polymer-modified mortar as a setting material following the manufacturer's guidelines, for use with stone panels

3.02 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. Cleaning Procedures For Field Application:

1. Clean stone panels as work progresses. Remove mortar fins and smears before tooling joints.

2. After 36 hours, wet the stonework down with water and then apply a mild cleaning detergent with a soft bristle brush to remove any dirt or mortar smear left from the installation. Do not use any type of acid or metal brush. Non muriatic acid cleaner as recommended by manufacturer. Comply with manufacturer's cleaning and sealing recommendations.
