About this file
This is a 2026 Standard Specification Section 04200 for Masonry work prepared by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC Water) in Maryland, detailing the requirements for masonry construction above and below grade. The specification establishes comprehensive requirements for sewer and manhole brick, concrete blocks, mortar, and grout materials, along with submittals including sample approval of at least four bricks and four blocks of each type before purchase and delivery. Key material specifications include sewer brick Grade SM per ASTM C32, manhole brick Grade MS, concrete blocks per ASTM C139, mortar types (Type M for below-grade work and Type S for above-grade work), and grout with minimum compressive strength of 2000 psi at 28 days. The specification restricts masonry placement when air temperatures fall below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and requires protective measures, including maintaining temperatures above 40 degrees Fahrenheit for 72 hours after placement and protecting work from direct sun and drying conditions during hot weather when ambient temperatures exceed 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
The specification establishes detailed execution requirements including preparation, mortar mixing procedures (minimum five minutes in a mechanical drum mixer with a maximum 45-minute usable period), and placement standards requiring uniform joint thickness of 3/8 to 1/2 inch with proper breaking of joints between courses. Approved manufacturers for sewer and manhole brick include General Shale Products Corp. and Glen-Gery Brick, with "or Equal" alternatives permitted subject to engineer approval. All materials must be accompanied by Certificates of Compliance, and delivery, handling, and storage requirements specify that materials be protected from moisture, foreign materials, and damage. The specification notes that measurement and payment for masonry work will not be made under this section, as masonry is considered essential material required in the construction of specific items measured and paid under various other line items or lump sum categories in the bid schedule.

1.5 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Masonry Placement:
1. Do not place masonry when air temperature falls below 40 degrees F. or when temperatures below 40 degrees F. are likely within 72 hours after mortar is placed, unless Engineer approves adequate means for protecting work from freezing.

but not more than 160 degrees F. and maintain air temperature above 40 degrees F.
on both sides of masonry for not less than 72 hours.
a. Do not work with or on frozen materials.
3. Protect new work against freezing weather for period of 72 hours after masonry is placed.
B. During hot weather, protect masonry from direct rays of sun.
1. Cover or wet all finished work for period of 3 days after placing.
2. When ambient air temperature is warmer than 95 degrees F. or when it appears probable that temperatures above 95 degrees F. will be encountered, protect work from sun and prevent drying out for not less than 72 hours after masonry is placed.
