Central Spine

The Central Spine lighting sequence will…

— Welcome visitors and guide them toward the Orientation Gallery

— Utilize gentle animations that don’t feel frenetic or cause overstimulation

— Enhance the architecture rather than distract

Overview

— Pre-programmed, looping, lighting effects that activate a series of archways leading into the Orientation Gallery

— Soft, gentle, lighting transitions enliven the space and subtly guide visitors

— In a future phase, LoC may add the ability to control the color of the show’s scenes dynamically, and AV hardware should allow for this eventuality

*Additional archways, TBC

Audio Approach

Name + Title Story Set-up“Personality” Intro Story Starts

“One of the fascinating things about the Library is it has the output of creativity—books, music, all these things— but it is also home to the process of creativity, where you can see how these things were made.”

“My name Ray White, I am a

Librarian in the Music Division at the Library of Congress…”

“... and I’m going to tell you about a few of my favorite things.”

“When Roger and Hammerstein were writing The Sound of Music…”

The first beat expands on the Quote Card from the table and sets the tone for the rest of the story

The Librarian introduces themself and their position at the Library (in some instances their title will need to be shortened)

The Librarian transitions to the story they are about to tell

The Librarian begins to tell the story

Art + Architecture

Art & Architecture

The Art & Architecture niche will…

— Focus on stories (and backstories) of the Jefferson Building

Audio Remix

What do the collections sound like?

Here, visitors have a primarily sonic encounter with the Library’s many holdings, at times supported with visuals.

The experience is exploratory in nature, focusing on delight and discovery over “music-making.”

Overview

— x3 bright, 4k portrait-oriented projections shaped to fit the archway shapes of the room’s architecture.

— Each projection is paired with an overhead speaker set-up and input station with physical buttons that visitors can interact with, which trigger sounds and visuals on the projection in front of them

— AV team to create or integrate MIDI pad and button components for each station, including any hardware programming needed to allow them to interface with Bluecadet’s application

Thomas Jefferson Library Films

Experience overview The TJ Library Films will punctuate the visitor flow and experience of the physical exhibition of Jefferson’s Library. Each of the 3 screens will feature a targeted person-forward narrative reflecting on a different answer to the question, why does this Library matter today?

Ultimately, these films are stories about big ideas that underpin Jefferson’s Library; ideas that also hold deep relevance to the world today.

Enrich appreciation:

the films should enhance a visitor’s experience of the physical exhibition of Jefferson’s library surrounding them

Accessible, digestible, human:

the films should reinforce the perhaps unexpected relevance of the TJ library for everyday, contemporary visitors in the here and now

Experience goals Target length: 3 min each

Content framework + story focus

Each film will offer a unique answer to the question “why does this Library matter today?”

Spirit of sharing From the outset, Jefferson sought to amass an ambitious collection. A collection through which Jefferson could actively participate in the flow of knowledge embodied by the enlightenment. It was a collection intended to be shared a used widely.

A collection whose purpose was rooted in access to knowledge and making information open and accessible. This film will explore the spirit of sharing and the continued import of this idea to the Library of Congress today.

The roots (and complexities) of revolution The books in this room helped shape Jefferson as a thinker and leader, informing values and ideas central to the American Revolution. And yet also apparent here are very American and human questions about the gulf that can exist between ideals and action. This film will explore the roots of revolution and Jefferson as a complicated man.

A library in use For Jefferson, books were a springboard to nearly every endeavor

- from gardening to learning Spanish to contemplating religion. This film will highlight the power of a library in use and the vast potential of an encyclopedic collection - exploring the unexpected inspiration that can come from anywhere and everywhere.

TJ’s Library reflects a desire to make knowledge and information open and accessible.

Sharing and access of knowledge -participation in a large flow of knowledge that books brings us.

>>Participate in the larger streams and thoughts… and share it further… share it with people.

A larger world of the enlightenment Accessibility at the intellectual level of information
