About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for Institutional Mentored Career Development Awards (K12) to eligible domestic institutions with a due date of July 12, 2029. The program does not allow appointed scholars to lead independent clinical trials, though scholars may participate in clinical trials under mentor or co-mentor direction.

Eligible applicants include public and private higher education institutions, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, tribal governments (federally recognized), tribal organizations (not federally recognized), faith-based or community-based organizations, eligible federal agencies, U.S. territories or possessions, and other domestic entities. Foreign organizations and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible; however, foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are allowed.

The award supports institutional programs designed to prepare later-stage postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty scholars committed to independent research careers for advancement and transition to more advanced mechanisms such as K08 and K23. Appointed scholars receive protected time (6–9 person-months or 50–75% effort, with 9 person-months preferred) to engage in intensive, mentored research career development experiences in biomedical and behavioral research. Program project periods extend up to five years, with funding amounts contingent on NIH appropriations and institutional program design. Indirect costs are reimbursed at 8 percent of modified total direct costs, excluding tuition, fees, consortium costs exceeding $25,000, and equipment expenditures.

Participating NIH Institutes and Centers include the Office of the Director, Office of AIDS Research, National Eye Institute, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and Tribal Health Research Office. The Office of Research on Women's Health and the INCLUDE Project may provide co-funding.

Application due dates follow NIH standard cycles: October 12, 2026; February 12, 2027; June 12, 2027; and continuing through 2029, with scientific merit review, advisory council review, and earliest start dates occurring three to five months after submission. Applicants must maintain active SAM registration, unique entity identifiers, eRA Commons accounts, and ORCID identifiers linked to eRA Commons profiles.

Synopsis

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Institutional Mentored Career Development grants to eligible domestic institutions to support career development programs designed to prepare later stage postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty scholars who have made a commitment to an independent research career for their career advancement and transition to independence. Supported scholars will have "protected time" to engage in intensive, mentored research career development experiences in the fields of biomedical and behavioral research. This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) does not allow appointed scholars to lead an independent clinical trial but does allow them to obtain research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor. NIH strongly supports training towards a career in clinically relevant research. As such, gaining experience in clinical trials under the guidance of a mentor or co-mentor is encouraged.
