About this opportunity
Brookhaven Science Associates, on behalf of the Department of Energy Office of Science, intends to solicit design, engineering, manufacturing, and assembly of Electron Storage Ring D2 Dipole Magnets for the Electron-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory, with solicitation expected in October 2026 and award anticipated in February 2027. This is a full and open competition with one anticipated award as a firm-fixed-price contract.
The requirement spans detailed design, purchase of materials, manufacturing, assembly, inspection, and testing of one first-article magnet and 194 production magnets across five configurations totaling approximately 730 tons of steel, procured preferably from a single heat to enable lamination shuffling for minimal magnetic field variation. The contractor must comply with technical specifications EIC-MSG-SPC-009 and EIC-MSG-SPC-010, ASME Y14.100 drawing standards, and ISO-9001 quality management requirements. Key milestones include Preliminary Design Review at week 5, Final Design Review at week 10, first-article delivery at week 44, Manufacturing Readiness Review approval at week 54, and production magnet delivery at week 104. The contractor is responsible for all tooling, fixtures, and test equipment and must maintain special tooling for three years post-completion. Work is performed in the United States.
Interested parties must register under NAICS code 332999 (All Other Miscellaneous Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing, 750-employee size standard) in the System for Award Management prior to proposal submission. The applicable PSC is AJ15. Responses to this pre-solicitation notice are not required and do not constitute an offer; actual solicitation will be posted to SAM.gov.
