About this opportunity
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), operating under the Department of Energy, has issued a solicitation for the procurement of Beamline M1 Mirrors as part of the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) project. The procurement seeks specialized synchrotron mirrors for four specific beamlines (BL5.3.2.1, 5.3.2.2, 6.3.2, and 11.3.2) that will support the upgrade of the existing 1.9 GeV storage ring to achieve a 100-1000 times increase in brightness and significantly higher coherent light fraction in the soft x-ray region. The mirrors must be manufactured from single-crystal silicon with gold or nickel coatings, meeting stringent optical performance requirements including specific slope errors, surface roughness standards, and ultra-high vacuum compatibility. Proposals will be evaluated based on technical compliance, engineering capabilities, lead time/delivery, past performance, and quality assurance factors. The original proposal due date has been extended via Amendment 1 to September 25, 2025, with questions originally due by July 16, 2025.
This procurement does not utilize any set-aside designations and is structured as two separate packages that can be bid independently. The solicitation does not identify any incumbent contractors or provide specific budget ranges for the anticipated awards. The procurement calls for a total of four mirrors (one per beamline) with delivery required in Ultra-High Vacuum compatible packaging by week 39 of the contract timeline, following a comprehensive 39-week schedule that includes kick-off meetings, monthly progress reports, factory acceptance testing, and final documentation delivery. Performance will take place at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California, with the project classified under NAICS code 334510 (Electromedical and Electrotherapeutic Apparatus Manufacturing) and having a small business size standard of 1,000 or fewer employees. The procurement is governed by LBNL's Prime Contract No. DE-AC02-05CH11231 with the U.S. Department of Energy and requires extensive compliance with federal acquisition regulations and environmental sustainability requirements.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (“University” or “LBNL”) requests a proposal for Beamline M1 Mirrors.
ALS-U is an upgrade project to the LBNL Advanced Light Source. The ALS is a 1.9 GeV storage ring operating at 500 mA of beam current. It is optimized to produce intense beams of soft x-rays, which offer spectroscopic contrast, nanometer-scale resolution, and broad temporal sensitivity. The ALS facility includes an accelerator complex and photon delivery system that is capable of providing the foundations for an upgrade that will achieve world-leading soft x-ray coherent flux. The existing ALS provides a ready-made foundation, including conventional facilities and also includes extensive beamlines (up to 40 simultaneously operating beamlines) and instrumentation, an experimental hall, computing resources, ancillary laboratories, offices, and related infrastructure that will be heavily utilized in an upgrade scenario.
The ALS will be upgraded with an MBA lattice design that will provide a soft x-ray source that is orders of magnitudes brighter — an up to 100-1000 times increase in brightness — and will provide a significantly higher fraction of coherent light in the soft x-ray region than is currently available at ALS.
