DEPARTMENT OF PARKS, RECREATION AND MARINE CITY OF LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA
Introduction The City of Long Beach is proposing to conduct maintenance dredging of the Catalina Cruises Terminal Basin and the South Shore Launch Ramp. These sites are located along the mouth of the Los Angeles River in Long Beach, California (Figure 1). The project design consists of dredging a total of approximately 17,508 cubic yards of material from the two project sites. This quantity includes 17,064 cubic yards of material from the Catalina Cruises Terminal Basin, and 444 cubic yards from the South Shore Launch Ramp.
Catalina Cruises Terminal Basin is located adjacent to 320 Golden Shore Street in Long Beach, California (Figure 1). The site is on the north side of the Los Angeles River Estuary also known as Queensway Bay. The basin is approximately 7 acres in size. The proposed dredge project footprint includes the eastern half of the basin which is approximately 3.5 acres (Figure 2).
South Shore Launch Ramp is located at 590 Queensway Drive, Long Beach. It is a small boat launch ramp located near the Queen Mary on the south side of the Los Angeles River Estuary (Figure 1 and Figure 3). The proposed project footprint at this site is approximately 4,800 square feet (0.11 acre) and does not extend beyond the floating docks.
On August 30, 2006, Tetra Tech, Inc. collected three samples from the Catalina Terminal Basin and one sample from the South Shore Launch Ramp (Figures 2 and 3). The samples within the Basin were collected using a vibra-core sampler to a depth of two feet beyond -15 feet mean lower low water (mllw). At the Launch Ramp the sample was collected to a depth of –6.7 feet mllw. Sample locations and depths are presented in Table 1 below. All field and laboratory work was performed in accordance with the methods and procedures described in the Sampling and Analysis Plan (SAP) for this project (Tetra Tech 2006). Immediately after sampling, the sediment samples were delivered in a cooler with blue ice to CRG Marine Laboratories, Inc. (CRG) in Torrance, California for physical and chemical analyses.
The results of the bulk sediment chemical analyses are presented below. Original chemistry reports are included in Appendix A. The chemical levels obtained in this study are compared to the effects range-low (ER-L), and effects range-median (ER-M). These effects levels are not available for all constituents analyzed.

General Chemistry The Total Organic Carbon (TOC) content of the Basin samples ranged from 0.87 to 3.13 percent.
The TOC levels increased from north to south with CCT-06-03, near the Basin entrance, having the highest level. The Launch Ramp sample had a TOC level of 0.37. The lower value from the Launch Ramp is attributed to the higher sand content of the sediments at this location.
Oil & Grease and total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons (TRPH) were not detected in three of the samples and detected below the reporting limit in sample CCT-06-03.
Total Sulfides ranged from 39 to 805 mg/kg wet weight. The distribution was similar to the TOC with levels increasing from north to south. The Launch Ramp sample had a level of 157 mg/kg.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs).
PCBs were detected in all four samples. The Aroclor 1254 was detected at levels ranging from
24.3 (ug/kg) to 32.1 (ug/kg) in the three Basin samples. The levels of each of the Congener-based PCBs were relatively low with most values below the reporting limit (5 ug/kg). Only samples CCT- 06-02 and CCT-06-03 had any levels above the reporting limit. In the northernmost Basin sample (CCT-06-01) and the Launch Ramp sample (SSLR-06-01) the individual Congener-based PCBs were below the reporting limit. However the sum Total of Detected PCBs exceeded the ER-L level in all three Basin samples.

CATALINA CRUISES TERMINAL WEST BASIN SAMPLING RESULTS 2007 PAGE 1
Introduction The City of Long Beach is proposing to conduct maintenance dredging of the West half of the Catalina Cruises Terminal Basin. This site is located along the mouth of the Los Angeles River in Long Beach, California (Figure 1). The project design consists of dredging approximately 30,545 cubic yards of material from the West half of the Basin. Previously a separate project was identified to dredge a total of approximately 17,508 cubic yards of material from the East half of the Basin. A separate sampling project was conducted in 2006 for the East half of the Basin where three samples were collected and analyzed.
Catalina Cruises Terminal Basin is located adjacent to 320 Golden Shore Street in Long Beach, California (Figure 1). The site is on the north side of the Los Angeles River Estuary also known as Queensway Bay. The basin is approximately 7 acres in size. The proposed dredge project footprint includes the western half of the basin which is approximately 3.5 acres (Figure 2).
On April 25, 2007, Tetra Tech, Inc. collected four samples from the west side Catalina Terminal Basin (Figure 2). The samples were collected using a vibra-core sampler to a depth of two feet beyond -15 feet mean lower low water (mllw).

Station Pesticides (ng/g)
Pesticides Pesticide results (dry weight) are presented below. The pesticides detected included DDTs (4,4’- DDE, 4,4’-DDE), and Chlordanes (Chlordane-alpha, Chlordane-gamma, cis-Nonachlor, and trans- Nonachlor). The level of 4,4’-DDD exceeded the ER-L level in one sample (CCT-07-06) based on the estimated value of 3.8 ng/g. Levels of 4,4’-DDE exceeded ER-L levels in all four samples and slightly exceeded ER-M levels in three samples (CCT-07-04, CCT-07-05, and CCT-07-07).
However levels of Total Detectable DDTs were below the ER-M level. The highest level of DDTs was found at Stations CCT-07-04 and CCT-07-05 which are in the northwest portion of the Basin.
Chlordanes were detected in all four samples.
