1.2 SCOPE
The project goal is to restore native plant communities that are biologically diverse and self-sustaining within the project site requiring woody species clearing and removal, and which does not negatively impact the existing high quality natural areas within the project site. Work consists of providing all labor, equipment, and material for the operations of tree and shrub clearing and removal, and follow-up herbiciding of cut stumps and resprouts from all areas within project limits.
1.3 ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
All work and Contractor operations shall comply with the requirements of Section 01 57 20.01, ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION FOR ILLINOIS.
1.4 CLEARING LIMITS
The objectives are to remove from all areas within project limits 100% of all invasive woody species listed within Section 31 31 19.13 CHEMICAL VEGETATION CONTROL and the following species that are 6" DBH (Diameter at Breast Height) and less except in locations identified by the COR or trees and shrubs flagged green to remain: Sugar Maple (Acer Ssaccharum), American Basswood (Tilia americana), Black Walnut (Juglans nigra), Black Cherry ( Prunus serotina), Red Oak (Quercus rubra), Sumac (Rhus spp.), Gray Dogwood ( Cornus racemosa), Atlantic Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius), Cottonwood ( Populus deltoides) Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides), willow (Salix spp.), and Raspberry (Rubus spp.). All woody species flagged orange by the Government must also be removed including trees, shrubs, and their resprouts. The Government will flag no more than 300 native trees in Project Area 1, 300 native trees in Project Area 2, and 150 native trees in Project Area 3, all of which will be greater than 6" DBH and no more than 25" DBH (these quantities do not include Ostrya virginiana, Carpinus caroliniana, and Hamamelis virginiana which must be removed in addition to
SECTION 31 13 13 Page 2 these quantities only if flagged orange by the Government). The Government may award up to 200 additional trees for removal in Project Area 1 and/or Project Area 2, all of which will be greater than 6" DBH and no more than 25" DBH. The Government will flag orange up to 30 native trees greater than 25" DBH in Project Area 2 that must be removed.
Flagging of any invasive woody species by the Government is only meant to aid in the proper identification of trees and shrubs and it is ultimately the responsibility of the Contractor to accurately identify all trees and shrubs before clearing of said trees and shrubs to ensure they are listed as invasive within Section 31 31 19.13 CHEMICAL VEGETATION CONTROL.
1.5 SUBMITTALS
Government approval is required for submittals with a "G" designation;
submittals not having a "G" designation are for information only. When used, a designation following the "G" designation identifies the office that will review the submittal for the Government. The following shall be submitted in accordance with Section 01 33 00 SUBMITTAL PROCEDURES:

Equipment shall be approved by the Contracting Officers Representative (COR). All mechanical equipment shall be rubber tracked unless otherwise approved by the COR and shall have a ground pressure rating of less than
9.0 psi.
Stockpiled trees are those that are removed from upland portions of the ravines, bluff, and plateau and stockpiled at the location designated on the drawings. Trees for this purpose must only consist of the whole trunk and large limbs. In the case that rootwads become available, these must be used as well.
Grubbing consists of the removal and disposal of stumps, roots larger than 3 inches in diameter and matted roots from the designated grubbing areas.

2.1 STOCKPILED TREES
Trees for stockpile must be taken from those that are removed from upland portions of the ravines, bluff, and plateau. A total of 150 trees must be stockpiled at the location shown on the drawings. Trees for this purpose must only consist of the whole trunk and large limbs. In the case that rootwads become available, these must be used as well. Trees must be large, with a minimum acceptable DBH of 24" and no maximum size. The trees must be stripped of small branches and leaves; branches must not be smaller than 8" in diameter, all branches smaller than this must be removed from utilized tree. If a tree with a root wad becomes available, the whole tree must be cut in half, so that both the rootwad and branches can be used as protrusion habitat. The rootwads or short pieces of trunk must also be utilized to be completely buried under the stone, which would form small internal cavities for mudpuppy use.
