SECTION 084113 - ALUMINUM-FRAMED ENTRANCES AND STOREFRONTS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2 SUMMARY

A. This Section includes the following:

1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. ATFP Performance Requirements:

1. Exterior aluminum-framed entrances and storefronts shall be designed per UFC 4-010-01 of the United States Department of Defense Unified Facilities Criteria

(UFC).

a. B-3.1.2 Window, Skylight, and Glazed Door Frames: Provide windows and skylight frames, mullions, and sashes and door rails and stiles of aluminum or steel as detailed below. Alternatively, use frames that provide performance to the required level of protection (see Tables 2.1 and 2.2 of UFC 4-010-01).

b. B-3.1.2.1 Frame Member Design: Steel members may be designed using ultimate yield stresses and aluminum members may be designed based on a 0.2% offset yield strength. Equivalent static design loads for the window, skylight, and door members shall be 7 kilopascals (1 lb per square in) applied to the surface of the glazing and frame. Deformations shall not exceed 1/60 of the unsupported member lengths.

c. B-3.1.2.2 Glazing Frame Bite: The glazing shall have a minimum frame bite of 9.5-mm (3/8-in) for structurally glazed systems and 25-mm (1-in) for window systems that are not structurally glazed.

d. B-3.1.2.3 Connection Design: Equivalent static design loads for connections of the window, skylight, or door frame to the surrounding

walls or roof, hardware and associated connections, and glazing stop connections shall be 75 kilopascals (10.8 lbs per square inch) for glazing panels with a vision area less than or equal to 1.0 square meters (10.8 square feet) and 30 kilopascals (4.4 lbs per square inch) for glazing panels with a vision area greater than 1.0 square meters (10.8 square feet) but less than or equal to 3.0 square meters (32 square feet). Loads shall be applied to the surface of the glazing and frame. Connections and hardware may be designed based on ultimate strength for steel and 0.2% offset yield strength for aluminum.

B. General: Provide aluminum-framed systems, including anchorage, capable of withstanding, without failure, the effects of the following:

1. Structural loads.

2. Thermal movements.

3. Movements of supporting structure indicated on Drawings including, but not limited to, story drift and deflection from uniformly distributed and concentrated live loads.

4. Dimensional tolerances of building frame and other adjacent construction.

5. Failure includes the following:

a. Deflection exceeding specified limits.

b. Thermal stresses transferred to building structure.

c. Framing members transferring stresses, including those caused by thermal and structural movements, to glazing.

d. Glazing-to-glazing contact.

e. Noise or vibration created by wind and thermal and structural movements.

f. Loosening or weakening of fasteners, attachments, and other components.

g. Sealant failure.

h. Failure of operating units to function properly.

C. Structural-Sealant Joints: Designed to produce tensile or shear stress in structural-sealant joints of less than 20 psi.

D. Deflection of Framing Members Normal to Wall Plane: Limited to 1/175 of clear span for spans up to 13 feet 6 inches and to 1/240 of clear span plus 1/4 inch for spans greater than 13 feet 6 inches or an amount that restricts edge deflection of individual glazing lites to 3/4 inch, whichever is less.

E. Structural-Test Performance: Systems tested according to ASTM E 330 as follows:

1. When tested at positive and negative wind-load design pressures, systems do not evidence deflection exceeding specified limits.

2. When tested at 150 percent of positive and negative wind-load design pressures, systems, including anchorage, do not evidence material failures, structural distress, and permanent deformation of main framing members exceeding 0.2 percent of span.

3. Test Durations: As required by design wind velocity but not less than 10 seconds.

F. Temperature Change (Range): Systems accommodate 120 deg F, ambient; 180 deg F, material surfaces.

G. Air Infiltration: Maximum air leakage through fixed glazing and framing areas of systems of 0.06 cfm/sq. ft. of fixed wall area when tested according to ASTM E 283 at a minimum static-air-pressure difference of 1.57 lbf/sq. ft..

H. Water Penetration Under Static Pressure: Systems do not evidence water penetration through fixed glazing and framing areas when tested according to ASTM E 331 at a minimum static-air-pressure difference of 20 percent of positive wind-load design pressure, but not less than 6.24 lbf/sq. ft..

I. Condensation Resistance: Fixed glazing and framing areas of systems have condensation-resistance factor (CRF) of not less than 53 when tested according to

AAMA 1503.

J. Average Thermal Conductance: Fixed glazing and framing areas of systems have average U-factor of not more than 0.69 Btu/sq. ft. x h x deg F when tested according to

AAMA 1503.

1.5 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated.

B. Warranties: Provide manufacturer’s warranty with requirements specified in “Warranties” article with submission of O&M manuals.

C. Shop Drawings: Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work.

1. Include structural analysis data signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer responsible for their preparation.

2. For entrances, include hardware schedule and indicate operating hardware types, functions, quantities, and locations.

D. Samples: For each exposed finish.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Installer Qualifications: Acceptable to manufacturer and capable of preparation of data for aluminum-framed systems including Shop Drawings based on testing and engineering analysis of manufacturer's standard units in assemblies similar to those indicated for this Project.

B. Structural-Sealant Glazing: Comply with recommendations in ASTM C 1401, "Guide for Structural Sealant Glazing."

1.7 WARRANTY

A. Special Assembly Warranty: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of aluminum-framed systems that do not comply with requirements or that deteriorate as defined in this Section within specified warranty period.

1. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following:

a. Structural failures including, but not limited to, excessive deflection.

b. Noise or vibration caused by thermal movements.

c. Deterioration of metals, metal finishes, and other materials beyond normal weathering.

d. Adhesive or cohesive sealant failures.

e. Water leakage through fixed glazing and framing areas.

f. Failure of operating components to function properly.

2. Warranty Period: 10 years from date of Substantial Completion.

B. Special Finish Warranty: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components on which finishes fail within specified warranty period.

Warranty does not include normal weathering.

1. Warranty Period: 20 years from date of Substantial Completion.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

A. Manufacturer and Product: (Basis-of-Design):

1. Kawneer.

a. Series: 350 Heavy WallTM Door; Medium stile, , 3-1/2" (89) vertical face dimension, 2" (51) depth.

2. Or Equal: Qualification data for “or Equal” manufacturers and products shall be made at time of submittal during construction. Preapproval will not be performed by the Government.

2.2 MATERIALS

A. Aluminum (Entrance Door and Components): Alloy and temper recommended by manufacturer for type of use and finish indicated, complying with the requirements of standards indicated below.

1. Extruded Material Standard: ASTM B 221, 6063-T6 alloy and temper.

B. Steel Reinforcement: Complying with ASTM A 36/ A 36M for structural shapes, plates and bars; ASTM A 611 for cold-rolled sheet and strip or ASTM A 570/ A 570M for hot-rolled sheet and strip.

C. Glazing Gaskets / Setting Blocks: Manufacturer's standard glazing system of black, resilient glazing gaskets, setting blocks, and shims or spacers, fabricated from an elastomer of type and in hardness recommended by system and gasket manufacturer to comply with system performance requirements.

D. Fasteners: Where exposed, shall be 300 Series, Stainless Steel.

E. Weather Stripping: Manufacturer's standard replaceable weather stripping as follows:

1. The door weathering on a single acting offset pivot or butt hung door and frame (single or pairs) shall be comprised of a thermoplastic elastomer weathering on a tubular shape with a semi-rigid polymeric backing.

2. Bottom Rail Sweep Strips shall be EPDM blade type gaskets in an aluminum extrusion.

2.3 HARDWARE

A. General: Provide heavy-duty hardware units indicated in sizes, number, and type recommended by manufacturer for entrances indicated. Finish exposed parts to match door finish, unless otherwise indicated.

B. Pivots and Hinges:

1. Butt Hinges: ANSI/BHMA A156.4, Grade 2 with Non-Removable Pin. Provide manufacturer’s standard top, bottom and intermediate hinges (as required) at each door leaf.

C. Closers:

1. Overhead Surface Closers:

a. LCN 4040 Super Smoothee

D. Locking Hardware & Exit Devices:

1. Exit Devices: Exterior Door

a. Von Duprin Series 9847 Rim Exit Device with Concealed Vertical Rod

1) Cylinder: “Best Access” - match building standard for pin

2) Cylinder dogging: Hex key

3) Electric Latch Retraction

4) Electric Strike Plate

5) Latch Guard: Latch guard only

6) Von Duprin Series 98 Exit Only Device

E. Electronic Strikes: As manufactured by Hanchett Entry Systems, Inc., no substitutions.

Strikes shall be .25 amp @ 24V VDC. Where scheduled in the hardware sets as (EB), provide an entry buzzer. Where scheduled fail secure (FSE) option shall be provided.

Where scheduled approved products are HES-9660-LBM or HES-1600-LBM electronic strikes. Electronic strike finish to match the door frame finish.

F. Pull Handles: Standard: Kawneer Architects Classic “CO-9” Pull.

G. Overhead Stops: Glynn-Johnson – 410F

H. Thresholds: At exterior doors, provide manufacturer's standard threshold with cutouts coordinated for operating hardware, with anchors and jamb clips, and not more than 1/2-inch- (12.7mm) high, with beveled edges providing a floor level change with a slope of not more than 1:2, and in the following material.

1. Material: Aluminum, mill finish.

2.4 ACCESSORIES

A. Spacers, Setting Blocks, Gaskets, and Bond Breakers: Manufacturer's standard permanent, non-migrating types in hardness recommended by manufacturer, compatible with sealants, and suitable for system performance requirements.

B. Framing system gaskets, sealants, and joint fillers as recommended by manufacturer for joint type.

C. Sealants and joint fillers for joints at perimeter of entrance system as recommended by the aluminum manufacturer to provide a weathertight seal.

D. Perimeter Anchors: When steel anchors are used, provide insulation between steel material and aluminum material to prevent galvanic action.

E. Bituminous Paint: Cold-applied asphalt-mastic paint complying with SSPC-Paint 12 requirements, except containing no asbestos, formulated for 30-mil (0.762-mm) thickness per coat.

2.5 COMPONENTS

A. Doors: Provide manufacturer's 2” (51) thick glazed doors with nominal 0.188" (5) thick, extruded tubular rail and stile members. Mechanically fasten corners with reinforcing brackets that are deep penetration and fillet welded.

1. Glazing Stops and Gaskets: Provide manufacturer's standard snap-on and screw applied extruded-aluminum glazing stops and preformed gaskets for glazed infill thickness specified.

2. Stile Design:

a. 350: 3-1/2” (89) Vertical Stile, 3-1/2” (89) Top Rail, 6-1/2” (166) Bottom Rail.

B. Brackets and Reinforcements: Provide manufacturer's standard brackets and reinforcements that are compatible with adjacent materials. Provide non-staining, nonferrous shims for aligning system components.

C. Provide manufacturer’s standard adjustable glass jacks for door alignment.

2.6 FABRICATION

A. General: Fabricate components per manufacturer’s installation instructions. When assembled, components will have accurately fitted joints to produce hairline joints.

1. Door corner construction shall consist of mechanical clip fastening, SIGMA deep penetration plug welds and 1-1/8” (29) long fillet welds inside and outside of all four corners.

2. Prepare components with internal reinforcement to receive door hardware.

3. Factory assemble door and frame units and factory install hardware to greatest extent possible.

4. Fabrication Tolerances: Fabricate aluminum entrances in accordance with entrance manufacturer’s prescribed tolerances.

B. Finishes

084113 - 7 ALUMINUM-FRAMED ENTRANCES

1. Factory Finishing:

a. Clear Anodic Finish: Class I II, clear anodic coating complying with

AAMA 611.

2.7 SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL

A. Source Quality: Provide aluminum entrances specified herein from a single source.

B. Fabrication Tolerances: Fabricate aluminum entrances in accordance with entrance manufacturer’s prescribed tolerances.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. General:

1. Fit joints to produce hairline joints free of burrs and distortion.

2. Rigidly secure nonmovement joints.

3. Install anchors with separators and isolators to prevent metal corrosion and electrolytic deterioration.

4. Seal joints watertight, unless otherwise indicated.

B. Metal Protection:

1. Where aluminum will contact dissimilar metals, protect against galvanic action by painting contact surfaces with primer or by applying sealant or tape or installing nonconductive spacers as recommended by manufacturer for this purpose.

2. Where aluminum will contact concrete or masonry, protect against corrosion by painting contact surfaces with bituminous paint.

C. Install components to drain water passing joints, condensation occurring within framing members, and moisture migrating within the system to exterior.

D. Set continuous sill members and flashing in full sealant bed as specified in Division 7 Section "Joint Sealants" and to produce weathertight installation.

E. Install components plumb and true in alignment with established lines and grades, without warp or rack.

F. Entrances: Install to produce smooth operation and tight fit at contact points.

1. Exterior Entrances: Install to produce tight fit at weather stripping and weathertight closure.

2. Field-Installed Hardware: Install surface-mounted hardware according to hardware manufacturers' written instructions using concealed fasteners to greatest extent possible.

G. Erection Tolerances: Install aluminum-framed systems to comply with the following maximum tolerances:

1. Location and Plane: Limit variation from true location and plane to 1/8 inch in 12 feet; 1/4 inch over total length.

2. Alignment:

a. Where surfaces abut in line, limit offset from true alignment to 1/16 inch.

b. Where surfaces meet at corners, limit offset from true alignment to 1/32 inch.

3. Diagonal Measurements: Limit difference between diagonal measurement to 1/8 inch.

3.2 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Structural-Sealant Glazing Inspection: After installation of aluminum-framed systems is complete, structural-sealant glazing shall be inspected and evaluated according to ASTM C 1401 recommendations.

B. Water Spray Test: Before installation of interior finishes has begun, a minimum area of 75 feet by 1 story of aluminum-framed systems designated by Architect shall be tested according to AAMA 501.2 and shall not evidence water penetration.

C. Repair or remove work where test results and inspections indicate that it does not comply with specified requirements.

D. Additional testing and inspecting, at Contractor's expense, will be performed to determine compliance of replaced or additional work with specified requirements.

2.4 ACCESSORIES
A. Spacers, Setting Blocks, Gaskets, and Bond Breakers: Manufacturer's standard permanent, non-migrating types in hardness recommended by manufacturer, compatible with sealants, and suitable for system performance requirements.
B. Framing system gaskets, sealants, and joint fillers as recommended by manufacturer for joint type.
C. Sealants and joint fillers for joints at perimeter of entrance system as recommended by the aluminum manufacturer to provide a weathertight seal.
D. Perimeter Anchors: When steel anchors are used, provide insulation between steel material and aluminum material to prevent galvanic action.
E. Bituminous Paint: Cold-applied asphalt-mastic paint complying with SSPC-Paint 12 requirements, except containing no asbestos, formulated for 30-mil (0.762-mm) thickness per coat.
2.5 COMPONENTS
A. Doors: Provide manufacturer's 2” (51) thick glazed doors with nominal 0.188" (5) thick, extruded tubular rail and stile members. Mechanically fasten corners with reinforcing brackets that are deep penetration and fillet welded.
1. Glazing Stops and Gaskets: Provide manufacturer's standard snap-on and screw applied extruded-aluminum glazing stops and preformed gaskets for glazed infill thickness specified.
2. Stile Design:

B. Brackets and Reinforcements: Provide manufacturer's standard brackets and reinforcements that are compatible with adjacent materials. Provide non-staining, nonferrous shims for aligning system components.

2.6 FABRICATION
A. General: Fabricate components per manufacturer’s installation instructions. When assembled, components will have accurately fitted joints to produce hairline joints.
1. Door corner construction shall consist of mechanical clip fastening, SIGMA deep penetration plug welds and 1-1/8” (29) long fillet welds inside and outside of all four corners.
2. Prepare components with internal reinforcement to receive door hardware.
3. Factory assemble door and frame units and factory install hardware to greatest extent possible.
4. Fabrication Tolerances: Fabricate aluminum entrances in accordance with entrance manufacturer’s prescribed tolerances.
B. Finishes
1. Factory Finishing:
a. Clear Anodic Finish: Class I II, clear anodic coating complying with AAMA 611.
2.7 SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL
A. Source Quality: Provide aluminum entrances specified herein from a single source.
B. Fabrication Tolerances: Fabricate aluminum entrances in accordance with entrance manufacturer’s prescribed tolerances.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. General:
1. Fit joints to produce hairline joints free of burrs and distortion.
2. Rigidly secure nonmovement joints.
3. Install anchors with separators and isolators to prevent metal corrosion and electrolytic deterioration.
4. Seal joints watertight, unless otherwise indicated.
B. Metal Protection:
1. Where aluminum will contact dissimilar metals, protect against galvanic action by painting contact surfaces with primer or by applying sealant or tape or installing nonconductive spacers as recommended by manufacturer for this purpose.
2. Where aluminum will contact concrete or masonry, protect against corrosion by painting contact surfaces with bituminous paint.
C. Install components to drain water passing joints, condensation occurring within framing members, and moisture migrating within the system to exterior.
D. Set continuous sill members and flashing in full sealant bed as specified in Division 7 Section "Joint Sealants" and to produce weathertight installation.
E. Install components plumb and true in alignment with established lines and grades, without warp or rack.
F. Entrances: Install to produce smooth operation and tight fit at contact points.
1. Exterior Entrances: Install to produce tight fit at weather stripping and weathertight closure.
2. Field-Installed Hardware: Install surface-mounted hardware according to hardware manufacturers' written instructions using concealed fasteners to greatest extent possible.
G. Erection Tolerances: Install aluminum-framed systems to comply with the following maximum tolerances:
1. Location and Plane: Limit variation from true location and plane to 1/8 inch in 12 feet; 1/4 inch over total length.
2. Alignment:
a. Where surfaces abut in line, limit offset from true alignment to 1/16 inch.
b. Where surfaces meet at corners, limit offset from true alignment to 1/32 inch.

3. Diagonal Measurements: Limit difference between diagonal measurement to 1/8 inch.

3.2 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Structural-Sealant Glazing Inspection: After installation of aluminum-framed systems is complete, structural-sealant glazing shall be inspected and evaluated according to ASTM C 1401 recommendations.
B. Water Spray Test: Before installation of interior finishes has begun, a minimum area of 75 feet by 1 story of aluminum-framed systems designated by Architect shall be tested according to AAMA 501.2 and shall not evidence water penetration.
C. Repair or remove work where test results and inspections indicate that it does not comply with specified requirements.
D. Additional testing and inspecting, at Contractor's expense, will be performed to determine compliance of replaced or additional work with specified requirements.
