GERRITSEN CREEK – GEOTECHNICAL REPORT
BROOKLYN, KINGS COUNTY, NEW YORK
PREPARED BY: THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS – NEW YORK DISTRICT
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Subsurface explorations were conducted at Gerritsen Creek in 2002 as part of an effort to restore portions of the creek’s tidal wetlands. Data was obtained from test pits and soil borings. The purpose of the exploration was to determine the geotechnical qualities of the strata beneath dump debris and to determine the amount of material that was deposited in the area.
REGIONAL AND LOCAL GEOLOGY
Gerritsen Creek is a tidal marsh that drains southward to Jamaica Bay. The wetlands surrounding the creek have been filled in with municipal waste, demolition debris, and dredged sediments.
Today, the remaining tidal wetlands occupy a significantly smaller area than in pre-disposal activity times. The topography and near surface geology of the Gerritsen Creek area has been significantly altered because of the filling-in of the wetland area. As part of the wetland restoration project, some of the overburden will be removed in order to create a larger intertidal cove. Once the artificial burden of the dump debris is removed, the native strata may rebound.
The amount of rebound that might occur is important to know in planning for the creation of wetlands. This was determined by performing laboratory testing on undisturbed tube (Shelby tube) samples obtained during the borings.
SUBSURFACE EXPLORATION PLAN
Soil borings were collected in an area of the study located near a golf course. Test pits were dug near the golf course and another area near an existing trail. The pits near the golf course were done along the edge of the water, in the existing stands of phragmites. The test pits along the trail were placed both on the inland and water side of the trail. Soil borings were conducted as continuous, two foot (2’), split-spoon samples to the bottom of the boring. A series of test pits were excavated down to the water table, the widths of the pits equaled the width of the excavation bucket and were eight to nine feet deep (8’-9’). The test pits were backfilled once observations and measurements were made. Data from test pits were based on visual observation and measurement. Standard Penetration Test (SPT) methods and procedures were employed to collect the continuous soil samples. The soil layers encountered were described and classified according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Blow counts, percent recovery, and water level were recorded.
SUBSURFACE EXPLORATION RESULTS
Structural profiles and cross-sections showing the lateral and vertical variations of the soil layers and the topography are shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Sixteen (16) soil borings were conducted near the golf course, concentrated in the northeastern part of the site. Borings confirmed the lateral and vertical extent of the dump material. The deepest boring was twenty-two feet (22’) below ground level. Five (5) Shelby Tubes were collected. Several split-spoons had very low recovery, indicating the softness of the material and its unconsolidated nature. Generally, a layer of topsoil and/or fill material was found to be in the first four to twelve (4’-12’) of the samples. Below this layer is an organic layer, which consisted of meadow mat and Silt or Clay to approximately eight to sixteen feet (8’-16’). A layer of wet, coarse Sand was present below the organic layer.
Excavation of the test pits was straight-forward, only minor obstructions were encountered. The debris included railroad ties, large boulders, and tree stumps. The test pits located near the golf course contained an organic layer (phragmites and root system) in the top three feet. Underlying the organic layer, was a layer of moist, brown, Sand. The water table was six to seven (6’-7’) below the ground surface. The pit walls remained relatively vertical during excavations and there were no sidewall cave-ins. No Clay layers were encountered and no debris or municipal waste was found. A layer of wet, dull-gray, coarse Sand was found at the bottom of all of the test pits;
it is dredged material from Rockaway Inlet. There were no odors emanating from the excavated pits. The test pits along the trail were wider than the ones that were done near the golf course and revealed debris and municipal waste. The organic layer was thinner in these pits as compared to the golf course pits. The gray, Rockaway Sands were not present in the pits. The water level remained at six to seven feet (6’-7’). No odors emanated from the pits.

The purpose of the undisturbed Shelby tube samples were to determine whether or not to expect subsurface material to rebound after the overburden of the dump material is removed. The soils that were tested were silty sands and clays with organic material. The testing results (Table 1) show that the recompression indexes for the soils are relatively low; therefore little rebound is expected to occur.
Table 2. Estimation of Soil Heave by Van Der Merwe Method
∆H = (D)(F)(PE), where F = 10(-5/20) and PE = 0.25 inch/foot D (feet) ∆H (inches) 1 0.141 2 0.281 3 0.422 4 0.562 5 0.703 SUM (D=1’ through D=5’) 2.109
Estimation of the rebound or swell of the meadow mat or sandy clay soils was determined using the Van Der Merwe Method. The method and formula are presented in TM 5-818-7
FOUNDATIONS IN EXPANSIVE SOILS. The total heave of the soil was determined using the
Van Der Merwe formula as show in Table 2. The PE values were obtained from the average percentage of clay in the soils and the plasticity index of the undisturbed Shelby Tubes samples.
The total heave or rebound at different removal of the fill is shown in Table 2 where the total heave or rebound for five feet of fill removal equals to 2.109 inches.
