About this file
This is Section 32 92 19 of technical specifications for seeding work as part of the Big Bend Lower Brule Bank Stabilization project for the US Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District. The section details requirements for soil preparation, seeding, and erosion control for areas disturbed by construction.
Key requirements include: applying 24 inches of planting soil at tree planting benches and 4 inches in other areas; seeding during specified seasons (April 1-June 10 for spring planting, November 1-January 31 for dormant planting); using specified seed mixtures for upland areas, wetland areas, and tree planting rows; applying straw mulch at 2 tons per acre; installing erosion control blankets on 3:1 slopes or greater near shorelines and in a 10-foot wide band landward of 2:1 slopes at the water's edge. The erosion control blanket must be a straw/coconut fiber mat with biodegradable netting. The contractor must maintain seeded areas with adequate watering to ensure 95% ground cover of established species and protect areas from traffic damage during establishment.

SEEDING
PART 1 GENERAL
Uniformly distribute seed varieties and quantities specified over all ground areas disturbed by grading and/or trenching and not otherwise surfaced and in such manner that will produce an even stand of grass over the entire area seeded. The area to be *Am-3 topsoiled topped with planting soil **Am-3 and seeded with the upland seed mixture outlined in the landscape plans is where the breakwater ties into the shore and all areas disturbed by construction and not otherwise paved or surfaced in aggregate or crushed concrete landward of the 3 to 1 slope at the water's edge along the shoreline, and landward of the 2 to 1 slope at the water's edge on the offshore breakwater planting terrace. The tree planting benches are to be *Am-3 topsoiled topped with planting soil **Am-3 and seeded with another upland seed mixture designated in the landscape plans for use between tree planting rows. Plant the islands formed from the temporary access roads, the 3 to 1 slope at the water's edge along the shoreline, and a 10 foot wide band of shoreline landward of the 2 to 1 slope at the water's edge along the offshore breakwater planting terrace with the wetland seed mixture outlined in the landscape plans.

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 PREPARATION
*Am-3
3.1.1 EXTENT OF WORK
Provide soil preparation prior to planting (including soil conditioners as required), fertilizing, seeding, and surface topdressing of all newly graded finished earth surfaces, unless indicated otherwise, and at all areas inside or outside the limits of construction that are disturbed by the Contractor's operations. Have the Contracting Officer verify that the finished grades are as indicated on the drawings, and the placing of topsoil and smooth grading have been completed in accordance with Section
31.00.00. Correct any deviation therefrom prior to seeding. Ensure soil used for repair of erosion and correction of grade deficiencies conforms to that specified in the paragraph topsoil planting soil .
3.1.1.1 Topsoil Planting Soil
Provide 24 inches of on-site topsoil planting soil at tree planting benches to meet indicated finished grade. In all other areas, provide 4 inches of on-site topsoil planting soil to meet indicated finish grade.
After areas have been brought to indicated finish grade, incorporate pH adjusters soil conditioners into soil a minimum depth of 4 inches by disking, harrowing, tilling or other method approved by the Contracting Officer. Remove debris and stones larger than 3/4 inch in any dimension remaining on the surface after finish grading. Correct irregularities in finish surfaces to eliminate depressions. Protect finished topsoil planting soil areas from damage by vehicular or pedestrian traffic.
It is anticipated that a larger volume of topsoil planting soil will be needed for the new grade than can be salvaged from the existing grade.
Place existing topsoil supplemented as needed with contractor-furnished
SECTION 32 92 19 Page 8 topsoil planting soil in order to place the specified amount of topsoil planting soil on areas to be seeded and/or areas disturbed by contractor work, staging, or stockpiling.
3.1.1.2 Soil Conditioner Application Rates
Apply soil conditioners at rates as determined by laboratory soil analysis of the soils at the job site.
**Am-3
3.2 STAKING
See attached appendix, Vegetated Riprap, for willow staking information
3.3 SEEDING
3.3.1 Seed Application Seasons and Conditions
Sow seed for spring planting from April 1 to June 10 and for dormant planting from Nov 1 to January 31. Perform seeding operations only during periods when beneficial results can be obtained. When drought, excessive moisture or other unsatisfactory conditions prevail, stop the work when directed. When special conditions warrant a variance to the operations, submit proposed times to and approved by the Contracting Officer.
3.3.2 Seed Application Method
Drill, broadcast, or drop seed the wetland seed mix. Drill seed the upland seed mix and tree row seed mix.
3.3.2.1 Broadcast and Drop Seeding
Uniformly broadcast seed at the rate specified for broadcast seeders.
Broadcast half of the seed in one direction, and the remainder at right angles to the first direction. Cover seed to an average depth of 1/4 inch but no more than 1/2 inch by disk harrow, steel mat drag, cultipacker, or other approved device. When broadcast seeded, apply the seed mix at twice the rate specified.
3.3.2.2 Drill Seeding
Uniformly drill seed mixes to an average depth of 1/4 inch at the rate specified using a Great Plains, Tye, Traux, John Deere Rangeland Drill, Brillon or similar native seed drill with seed agitators, picker wheels and multiple seed boxes. Ensure seeds planted in rows are no more than 6 inches apart.
3.3.3 Mulching
*Am-3
3.3.3.1 Hay or Straw Mulch
Hay or straw Straw mulch must be spread uniformly at the rate of 2 tons per acre. Mulch must be spread by hand, blower-type mulch spreader, or other approved method. Mulching must be started on the windward side of relatively flat areas or on the upper part of steep slopes, and continued uniformly until the area is covered. The mulch must not be bunched or
SECTION 32 92 19 Page 9 clumped. Sunlight must not be completely excluded from penetrating to the ground surface. All areas installed with seed must be mulched on the same day as the seeding. Mulch must be anchored immediately following spreading.
**Am-3
3.3.4 Erosion Control Blanket
Use erosion control blanket in areas along the shoreline with 3 to 1 slopes or greater and in a 10 foot wide band landward of the 2 to 1 slope at the water's edge of the offshore breakwater planting terrace. Properly prepare, amend, and seed the area to be covered with erosion control blanket (Woven Coconut), and (Straw/Coconut before the blanket is placed. Install in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
Place the blanket smoothly but loosely on the soil surface without stretching. Bury the upslope end in a trench 6 inches wide by 6 inches deep beyond the crest of the slope to avoid undercutting. For slope applications, install with a 6 inch overlap where one roll of blanket ends and another begins with the uphill blanket placed on top of the blanket on the downhill side. Install with a 4 inch overlap wherever 2 widths of blanket are applied side by side. Insert staples in a pattern according to the manufacturer's recommendation at approximately 2 staples per square yard.
3.3.5 Watering
Start watering areas seeded as required by temperature and wind conditions. Apply water at a rate sufficient to insure thorough wetting of soil to a depth of 2 inches without run off. During the germination process, seed is to be kept actively growing and not allowed to dry out.
3.4 PROTECTION OF TURF AREAS
Immediately after turfing, protect area against traffic and other use.
3.5 RESTORATION
Restore to original condition existing turf areas which have been damaged during turf installation operations at the Contractor's expense. Keep clean at all times at least one paved pedestrian access route and one paved vehicular access route to each building. Clean other paving when work in adjacent areas is complete.
