About this file

This document is an Operation and Maintenance Manual for the SCH davit system, a life-saving equipment launch and recovery device manufactured by Ned-Deck Marine BV of Barneveld, Netherlands.

The manual provides comprehensive guidance for installing, operating, and maintaining the SCH davit system designed for marine vessel applications. Installation procedures require switching power off, routing supply cables through the crane center, securing the unit to a pedestal foundation using specified torque moments (450 Nm for Ø400 mm pedestal; 660 Nm for Ø520 mm pedestal), and filling the winch and hydraulic tank to proper levels before pressurizing the accumulator system. The davit operates in both normal and emergency situations, with two launching procedures available: a normal case requiring cradle release and controlled lowering, and an emergency case allowing in-cradle embarkation. Recovery is limited to a maximum of six persons and requires hoisting to the highest position via electric motor with automatic limit switch engagement. The system incorporates a Type 04-04 winch equipped with electric motor, limit switch, and switchboard, featuring a centrifugal brake, holding brake, and manual cranking capability. Maintenance responsibilities include crew-performed greasing (monthly on all grease nipples and wire rope), oil changes in the winch gearbox, visual system inspections, wire rope condition checks, and hydraulic system monitoring with accumulator pressure maintained between 280-325 bar. The accompanying technical documentation includes hydraulic diagrams, electrical schematics for standard and optional configurations, spare parts lists, and a logbook for recording inspections and maintenance activities performed by certified companies in accordance with MSC.1/Circ.1206 standards.

Ned-Deck Marine 2

1. System introduction.

All Ned-Deck Marine life saving systems are designed according to the standards which have been recorded by the different classification bureaus. This means that all our systems meet the requirements which are necessary for lowering and hoisting life saving equipment.

The Ned-Deck Marine SCH davit is designed for long time operation and stowing in a tough and corrosive marine environment.

Operation can be done in normal situation as well as in “dead” ship situation.

The crane is delivered complete, fully tested, adjusted and ready for installation. For this installation, a substructure (foundation) must be welded to deck by the yard. The crane is supplied as a complete self contained “plug and play” unit.

The davit can delivered such that operation of the crane can be done on the right or left side of the rotating part of the crane. All equipment installed on the crane is chosen to ensure the lowest emission of sound. The equipment is installed as such, that the access for servicing and repair is most optimal.

Operating the davit in “dead ship” situation can be done true a well designed hydraulic stored power system. This power is stored in the accumulator which can delivered in two different volumes. Each accumulator volume does have its own range, which are: 110º or 180º.

For using the life saving system properly, a well founded knowledge of the equipment is necessary. The operation and maintenance manual has been written to provide this knowledge. Therefore it is recommended to read this manual thoroughly.

To assure a safe and well executed launching, an instruction plate has been installed. This plate is showing the exact sequence of the launching procedure and is placed near the embarkation position. By following these instructions one by one, a safe launching is guaranteed. Nevertheless, the complete launching procedure for safe launching and recovery is described in this operation manual.

Ned-Deck Marine 3

2. Installation procedure

1. always switch the main power on the starter box off first.

2. See drawing P-100260, the supply cable is to be guided through the center of the crane to the starter box. Best thing to do, is to use a rope or wire to pull on the cable. Lift the crane approx ½ meter above the pedestal and run the supply cable through. Once the cable is guided through lower the crane on the pedestal.

See drawings P-102572 and P-100753, two pedestal types are available.

These are the P.C.D. Ø400 mm and the P.C.D. Ø520 mm. Place the foundation bolts and tighten them with a torque spanner. Generally we prescribe that the pre-span moment for the Ø400 mm pedestal equals 450 [Nm] and the pre-span moment for the Ø520 mm equals 660 [Nm]. When the situation has been changed, for example a longer arm than usual, the pre-span moment is mentioned on the general arrangement drawing as well.

3. Operating the davit.

To achieve the safest launch and recovery possible, it is obvious that a trained davit operator and boat crew are essential. Operating personnel must be fully acquainted with the equipment, and must be certified.

3.1. Craft Launching and Recovery.

For a safe launching, the following preparations should be taken by the crew.

3.1.1. Preparations before Launching.

• Tighten boat fall by means of the crank.

• Remove all protection covers.

• Remove boat lashings.

• Make sure the wire ropes create no obstruction, blocking the turning out procedure.

• Check if the boat chocks do not obstruct the turning out procedure.

• Check and remove any obstruction / railing.

• Check the boat drains.

• Check if the Remote Control wires are not connected to the rescue boat.

Note: If one or more points are not to the full satisfaction of the operator or crew, the launch must be aborted and Ned-Deck Marine must be informed.

3.1.2. Launching Procedure for a rescue boat.

For the SCH type davit, there are two launching procedures available.

Normal case:

• Releasing the cradle: -In case of fixed boat cradle: hoist boat by hand cranking till its free from the cradle for slewing out.

-In case of a releasable cradle: release lashings and boat is free to slew out.

• Embarkation of the crew.

• For your safety, if the craft is equipped with seat belts they should be fastened.

• Operate the hydraulic valve (located on top of the power pack) by pulling the remote control triangle for slewing out and slew the davit into the outboard position.

Ned-Deck Marine 9

• When reaching the lowering position, stop slewing.

• Lift the brake lever of the winch, there are two options available:

o From within the craft, pull on the remote triangle for lowering. The descend will start. Once properly activated, the lowering will proceed until the craft is waterborne.

o From near the winch; lift the brake lever by hand. Stopping the descend is still possible. By actuating the brake lever by hand, the descend will be activated until the craft is waterborne.

• Start the engine of the survival craft, following the instruction of the boat manufacturer.

• Release the hook when waterborne.

Emergency case:

• Releasing the cradle:

• In case of fixed boat cradle: hoist boat by hand cranking till the it is free from the cradle for slewing out.

• In case of a releasable cradle: release lashings and boat is free to slew out.

• Embarkation of the boat while it is still in it’s cradle.

• For your safety, if the craft is equipped with seat belts they should be fastened.

• Pull the slewing remote control from within the craft. This will slew the boat outboard.

• When reaching the lowering position, pull the remote lowering control for lowering the boat until it is waterborne.

• Start the engine of the survival craft by following the instruction of the boat manufacturer.

• Release the boat hook when waterborne.

Ned-Deck Marine 10

3.1.3. Recovery Procedure.

• The recovery of any rescue boat is only allowed with a maximum of six (6) persons in the boat.

• Make sure the slings contain slack and fasten them in the boat hook.

• Start hoisting from the control stand on the davit.

• When reaching the highest hoisting position, the electric driven hoisting is automatically stopped by the limit switch on the winch.

• Check if the hoisting rope is spooled up correctly.

• Start slewing by means of operating the hydraulic valve and rotate the crane to the inboard position.

• Lower the boat on the chocks by using the brake lever for gravity lowering

• Replace the gripe gear and tighten up as much as possible.

• For preparing the craft for stowing, follow the instructions as given in the manual for the survival craft.

• Replace all protection covers.

• De-load the wire rope to a hand taut extend by lifting the brake lever shortly.

• Always keep main switch “on” (anti condensation heating) only “off’’ during service.

During adjustment, look through here!

Ned-Deck Marine 14

The limit switch has been pre-adjusted in our workshop. If this is not the case and the limit switch keeps cutting out at an earlier stage, the limit switch must be re-adjusted.

To do so, this procedure is to be examined and executed.

1. Remove the cover of the limit switch. The interior shows three plastic adjusting screws. One black and two white. Fig. 5.-1.

2. Rotating screw S1 counter clockwise (CCW) will increase the height between hook and davit head. Rotating this screw in clockwise (CW) direction, will decrease the height between hook and davit head.

Note: Adjusting the screws of the limit switch must be done with great accuracy and care. For example, turning the screw 5 degrees (CCW or CW) will give a change in height of approx 100mm.

3. When the screw S1 has been adjusted, the hook must be dropped approx. 5 meters. Then, hoist the boat back up again and check if the height between hook and crane is sufficient.

Note: When the desired height has not been reached, repeat steps 1 to 3 until this height is reached.

The correct height between boat and davit head should be approx. 100 – 200mm.

4. For safety and not unwinding the wire rope on the drum there is also a limit switch for unwinding. Rotating screw S2 counter clockwise (CCW) will increase the length of the wire rope on the drum. Rotating this screw in clockwise (CW) direction, will decrease the length of the wire rope on the drum.

Note: Adjusting the screws of the limit switch must be done with great accuracy and care. For example, turning the screw 5 degrees (CCW or CW) will give a change in length on drum of approx 100mm.

5. When the screw S2 has been adjusted, the hook must be dropped approx. 5 meters. Then, hoist the hook back up again and check if the length on drum is 3 windings.

Note: When the desired length has not been reached, repeat step 4 and 5 until this length is reached. The correct length of the wire rope on the drum must be 3 safety windings.

When the correct height has been reached, the limit switch cover must be replaced.

3.4. Hydraulic System.

The hydraulic system is designed to take over manual slewing. Slewing out from stowed position to the launching position is realized by accumulated (stored) power.

The power needed is obtained by the hydraulic power pack. As described in § 3.2.5., the hydraulic power pack consists of the following main components:

Ned-Deck Marine 15

- Stainless steel hydraulic tank (AISI 316) with drain valve. (contains hydraulic oil).

- Hydraulic pump. (Drives a worm gear on the column).

- Electric motor. (Drives a hydraulic pump to maintain pressure).

- Pressure switches. (Activates E-motor when more pressure is needed).

- Pressure relieve valve. (relieves high pressure).

- Control valve.

- Accumulator. (Maintains pressure / stored power).

The power consumption of the power pack is approx. 3.5 kW. Standard is the accumulator capacity 32 liter (dm3). This capacity is sufficient for a slewing angle of approx. 120º. Optional is the accumulator capacity of 50 liter (dm3). This capacity is sufficient for a slewing angle of approx. 180º.

Drawing H-100415 shows the hydraulic diagram.

3.5. 04- Winch System.

This winch is the Type 04- winch equipped with; an Electric Motor, Limit Switch and a Switchboard.

Ned-Deck Marine 16

3.5.1. Important notes!

• Function of the hand wheel.

o The hand wheel is designed as such, that lowering of an empty hook is possible. When during service the hook is to be lowered without a load present, we can lift the brake lever and push the hand wheel in counter flange in the same while we can rotate now the hand wheel for lowering the hook. Due to the fact that lifting the brake lever and turning the hand wheel can not be done simultaneously by hand, it is advisable to bring a tool for holding the brake lever in position or to operate the winch system with help from an assistant.

Please be aware that, because of your safety, that of others and damage prevention, the brake lever should never be lifted during service when a load is present in the hook system!

• Brake Lever.

o The brake lever is designed as such, that the own weight of the lever creates enough force to activate the hold brake. Therefore it is not necessary to force the lever into action by hand force or any other force extra applied.

Please be advised that by applying an extra weight or force on the brake lever, the bearing which is located behind the driven gear wheel inside the winch can be damaged. Indication of bearing damage can be noticed by noise, movement of the driven gear wheel or in the worst case, total dysfunction of the holding brake system.

If by any chance this has happened, please inform Ned-Deck Marine BV.

Ned-Deck Marine 17

4. Maintenance Manual.

In this chapter the required maintenance will be described. The detailed maintenance/ repair must be conducted by the manufacturer’s representative or a person appropriately trained and certified by the manufacturer for the work in accordance with MSC.1/Circ.1206.

4.1. Service done by the crew.

Due to the fact that the manufacturer must service the system there are three items left which must be done by the crew.

• Greasing

• Changing of oil

• Visual check of the system.

• Wire ropes

• Hydraulic system.

4.1.1. Greasing

Lubrication is essential for the function of the davit and winch. This greasing must be regularly conducted.

All grease nipples of the davit and winch should be greased at least once a month.

Wire rope oil/grease should be regularly checked to prevent loss of oil/grease. Wire rope should be oiled or greased two months in general.

4.1.2. Changing of oil

Gear oil inside the boat winch should regularly be checked regarding amount, change of color and mixture of moisture.

4.1.3. Visual check of the system.

Visual check contains checking all points written in the inspection sheet.

4.1.4. Wire Ropes.

Checking the wire rope contains the following items.

• Cracks or kinks

• Fixing conditions

• Lubrication

• Erosion / corrosion

4.1.5. Hydraulic System.

For maintaining the hydraulic system, periodical checks must be executed. In order to check the system the next steps must be followed.

• The pressure in the accumulator should be checked. The pressure should be between 280 bar and 325 bar.

Ned-Deck Marine 18

• Function check of the accumulator. With this check we will verify the function of the manometer, gas pre-fill pressure and the function of the E-motor and the electric switch.

o The level of the hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic tank should be checked every month. The minimum amount of oil must not be less than the middle of the lowest side glass.

o The function of the manometer can be checked by slewing the davit to outboard position.

o When using the accumulator the pressure drops until it reaches a certain value. The lowest value indicated on the manometer, while using the accumulator, is the gas pre-fill pressure. This should be approx. “P0” bars.

While conducting these checks, we will notice that the E–motor will start. The pump will start when the pressure is below 280 bars. This indicates that the electric switch and the E-motor are functioning properly. The functioning of these components can be easily checked this way.

Note: The complete quantity of hydraulic oil must be replaced during the annual service. When the minimum level of the oil inside the power pack is under the side glass before a annual service is conducted; Ned-deck marine shout be informed.

4.3. Painting.

When repainting the davits, winches etc., it frequently happens that a new layer of paint is applied over the previous layer. This may cause serious problems to the free clearances of the moving parts, because they might fill up with paint. Therefore precautions must be taken before repainting so the moving parts won’t seize up. It is therefore strongly recommended that the old layer of paint is removed from the areas which surround the moving parts. Also the grease nipples must never be painted, to avoid stoppage in the grease channels. A red circle must be painted around every grease nipple.

Ned-Deck Marine 20

5. Recommended lubricants.

The oil used in the winch is to reduce friction, reduce wear during use, decrease the internal temperature in the winch during use and to preserve the winch from corrosion.

The Kinematic viscosity of the preferred oil is calculated by the Ned-Deck Marine BV technical department and is regulated by an external organization specializing in lubrication and lubricants. The outcome, which validates the ISO VG type oil, is as follows:

System: = Surrounding environment.

= Used materials.

= Low start-up temperature.

= Infrequently used system.

= Dynamic, static forces inside the system.

= Shock loads.

Kinematic viscosity at 40˚ C = ±260 [mm2/s].

ηeff = = 234 [mPas].

Effective dynamic viscosity at 40˚ C = ISO VG 220. (Depending on system).

In the accompanying information sheets, a recommended oil list is inserted.

Ned-Deck Marine 21

6. General safety provisions.

• Never insert objects of any description in rotating parts.

• Use the right tools in the right place.

• Immediately replace damaged pipes and hoses.

• Never work on pipes that are under pressure.

• Always wear protective clothing, safety shoes and all-round visibility safety goggles.

• Never eat, drink or smoke when working.

• Ensure there is sufficient ventilation.

• Prevent hydraulic oil from coming into contact with your eyes.
