07 81 23 -10 AM-05

G. FAILURE: If an individual thickness determination or the average calculated thickness in the randomly selected area does not meet the design criteria for minimum individual thickness or thickness average, then only that specific member shall fail. The remaining structural members in other areas shall not be deemed to have failed solely because the tested component has failed. If the structural member fails to meet the design criteria for thickness average or minimum individual thickness, it shall be corrected and re-tested and another similar component in another randomly selected area on the same elevation shall also be tested.

H. TESTS FOR BEAMS AND COLUMNS: A series of thickness determinations shall be conducted in a specific pattern as detailed herein. W-Shape Beams:

Thickness determinations shall be made at nine locations around the beam, at each end of a 12-inch length and at the mid-point. W-Shape Columns: Thickness determinations shall be made at 12 locations around the column, at each end of a 12-inch length and at the mid point.

I. THICKNESS MEASUREMENT AVERAGING: A single average thickness shall be calculated, as note in paragraph I. above, from each series of individual thickness determinations on the structural members tested.

The calculated average thickness shall be equal to or greater than the thickness specified in the fire-resistance design criteria. The single calculated average measurement shall be reported in mils.

J. THICKNESS CORRECTION: Thickness shall be corrected by applying additional intumescent fireproofing at any location where the calculated average thickness of the material is less than the minimum thickness required by the design or where an individual thickness determination is less than 80 percent of the thickness specified in the fire-resistance-rating design criteria.

K. VISUAL INSPECTION: The intumescent fireproofing applied to structural members shall not, upon complete drying/curing, exhibit deep or wide cracks, voids, spalling, delimitation or any exposure of the substrate.

Minor surface irregularities of applied intumescent fireproofing are inherent with application and shall be deemed acceptable.

L. PATCHING: When the intumescent fireproofing has been removed for any purpose, it shall be replaced.

M. PATCHING MATERIAL: All areas to be repaired shall be patched with the same intumescent fireproofing as used for the original application.
