About this file

This is a groundwater monitoring event data submittal report for Fall 2019 (Event 79) conducted at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Systems Center (NSSC) in Natick, Massachusetts. Plexus Scientific Corporation submitted the report on February 13, 2020, to the U.S. Army Environmental Command Northeast Environmental Services and Support Division, documenting groundwater sampling conducted November 15-20, 2019, across three remediation sites (NRDEC-05, NRDEC-11, and NRDEC-16). The monitoring covered five area zones: T-25 Area, Former Proposed Gymnasium Site, Boiler Plant Area, Buildings 22 and 36 Area, and Buildings 63, 2, and 45 Area.

The analytical results from two ALS sample delivery groups (SDGs 3070983 and 3071376) revealed volatile organic compound (VOC) detections across multiple monitoring wells and extraction wells. Notable findings included trichloroethene (TCE) detections ranging from 0.64 to 25.4 micrograms per liter, with the highest concentration (25.4 μg/L) detected in monitoring well MW-25BR and moderate levels in MW-208B (5.8 μg/L) and EW-07 (5.4 μg/L). Additional detections included acetone, tetrachloroethene, cis-1,2-dichloroethene, 2-butanone, and chloroform across various monitoring locations. The report includes detailed analytical data tables, groundwater sampling data sheets, calibration logs, and field notes as attachments. A project manager notation questioned the classification of certain results as "exceptions" based on historical comparison to June 2019 annual report data.

RE: Fall 2019 Groundwater Monitoring Event 79 Data Submittal Environmental Remediation Services at NRDEC-05, NRDEC-11, and NRDEC-16 at U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center (SSC), Natick, Massachusetts.

Dear Ms. Summers, Plexus Scientific Corporation is pleased to submit this letter summarizing the implementation and results of the Fall 2019 Monitoring Event 79, which was conducted between November 15 and 20, 2019. Results from Monitoring Event 79 are included in the following ALS sample delivery groups (SDGs):

3070983 and 3071376

The analytical results for these SDGs are presented in Attachment A; groundwater sampling data sheets are presented in Attachment B; calibration logs are presented in Attachment C; and field notes are presented in Attachment D.

Should you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely, PLEXUS SCIENTIFIC CORPORATION

Daniel Schur, EIT Project Manager

Groundwater Monitoring Event 79 Results Discussion Event 79 groundwater samples were collected from the T-25 Area, the Former Proposed Gymnasium Site, the Boiler Plant Area, Buildings 22 and 36 Area, and the Buildings 63, 2, and 45 Area. Results are discussed below.

Based on the analytical data presented in the attached tables (Attachment A), no unusual results in contaminant concentrations were observed during Event 79 with the following exceptions:

1. Trichloroethene was detected below reporting limits at 2.5 micrograms per liter (µg/L) in the sample for monitoring well MW-160A.

2. Trichloroethene was detected above reporting limits at 5.4 micrograms per liter (µg/L) in the sample for extraction well EW-07.

3. Trichloroethene was detected below reporting limits at 1.2 micrograms per liter (µg/L) in the sample for monitoring well MW-167B.

4. Trichloroethene was detected above reporting limits at 5.8 micrograms per liter (µg/L) in the sample for monitoring well MW-208B.

5. Trichloroethene was detected above reporting limits at 25.4 micrograms per liter (µg/L) in the sample for monitoring well MW-25BR

Analytes were detected in certain monitoring wells as follows:

1. 2-Butanone was detected at 3.6 J and 3.1 J µg/L in MW-129A and MW-5R, respectively.

2. Acetone was detected in the following concentrations (µg/L) in the following wells:

a. 4.5 J in EW-07

b. 4.2 J in EW-08

c. 8.8 in MW-127A

d. 3.2 J in MW-128A

e. 8.4 in MW-129A

f. 3.8 J in MW-18B

g. 3.1 J in MW-209B

h. 3.2 J in MW-51BR

i. 15.8 in MW-5R

j. 4 J MW-25BR

3. Chloroform was detected at 0.84 J µg/L in MW-201B

4. Cis-1,2-Dichloroethene was detected at 0.36 J, 0.40 J, and 1.5 µg/L in MW-18B, MW- 209B, and MW-25BR, respectively.

5. Tetrachloroethene was detected in the following concentrations (µg/L) in the following wells:

a. 0.42 J in MW-18B

b. 3.0 in EW-06

c. 1.1 in EW-07

d. 15.1 in EW-08

e. 0.54 J in MW-105A

f. 2.1 in MW-167B

g. 0.54 J in MW-208B

h. 0.53 J in MW-5R

James.B.Connolly Sticky Note I am unclear on why some of these are called out as exceptions. Comparing to detections shown in June 2019 Draft Final Annual Report Figure 5-3 Pg 95 of 180.

i.e., MW-160A TCE averaging about 2.0 vs. 2.5 ug/L MW-167B-2, similarly only slightly lower than historical MW-208B-HP2 slightly above average, but lower than Event 75, maybe returning to average range?

Maybe describe (briefly) why you see them as exceptions.

6. Trichloroethene was detected in the following concentrations (µg/L) in the following wells:

a. 2.5 in MW-160A

b. 9.1 in EW-03

c. 9.5 in EW-04

d. 5.4 in EW-07

e. 0.64 J in EW-08

f. 2.4 in MW-160A

g. 1.2 in MW-167B

h. 0.65 J in MW-202C

i. 5.8 in MW-208B

j. 2.8 in MW-209B

k. 0.65 J in MW-212C

l. 4.1 in MW-51BR

m. 24.2 in MW-125B

n. 25.4 in MW-25BR

o. 2.4 in MW-83B
