1 BACKGROUND AND GENERAL INFORMATION

1.1 The Warrior Games were established in 2010 as a way to enhance the recovery and rehabilitation of our

Nation’s Wounded Warriors (W2) by introducing them to the world of competitive adaptive sports.

Sponsored by the U.S. Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the inaugural Warrior Games hosted approximately 200 Wounded, Ill, and Injured Service Members and Veterans. Under the ownership of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), the Warrior Games have expanded in size and scope with hundreds of athletes from multiple countries competing in events across a large assortment of both individual and team sports.

1.2 Beginning in 2015, the individual U.S. military services (Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps) and the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) took responsibility for hosting the Warrior Games at a location selected by their leadership. In 2015, the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) was the first service to host the Warrior Games at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. They were followed by the U.S. Army in 2016 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. The U.S. Navy hosted the 2017 Warrior Games in Chicago, Illinois; the U.S. Air Force in 2018 at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and USSOCOM in 2019 in Tampa, Florida. The USMC was to host the 2020 Warrior Games in San Antonio, Texas;

however, it was cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

1.3 The 2021 Warrior Games will be hosted by the U.S. Army at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports (WWOS) Complex and other locations throughout the Orlando, Florida community starting 12 September 2021 and ending on or about 22 September 2021. Wounded, ill and injured athletes from the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, USMC, USSOCOM, and up to seven partner nations will compete for the gold in Archery, Cycling, Field, Golf, Indoor Rowing, Powerlifting, Precision Air Sports, Sitting Volleyball, Swimming, Track, Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Rugby. Each team is limited to no more than 45 athletes total with a support staff not to exceed 100.

1.4 Since the introduction of the Warrior Games, there has been a significant increase in the collected DOD Uniformed Services’ adaptive sports programs participation by Wounded, Ill, and Injured athletes. The Warrior Games is a springboard for many Service Members and Veterans to continue participating in adaptive sporting programs within their communities. There has also been a growing interest within these communities to support the recreational and sports activities for the Wounded, Ill, and Injured population, which has benefitted the entire community of disabled persons.
