About this file
This is a comprehensive set of design documents for a Distillation Column project at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the Integrated Biorefinery Facility (IBRF) at South Table Mountain. The project involves designing a distillation column system with multiple components, including a distillation column (2300-T-001), overhead receiver (2300-V-001), bottoms sump (2300-V-002), heat exchangers, pumps, and associated instrumentation. The system is designed to process 1.0 BBL/DAY of oxygen-free C18 Alkanes from a hydrotreater, with key operating conditions including a column operating pressure of 20 psig, maximum temperature of 685 deg F, and the ability to handle temperature-sensitive feeds through potential vacuum operation.
The technical documentation includes detailed process design basis, P&IDs, equipment specification sheets, and performance data for each component. The system features multiple pumps (bottoms product, reflux, and overhead water product), heat exchangers for cooling and heating, and specialized vessels with specific nozzle configurations. Critical design considerations include material selection (predominantly 316 SS), NRTL certification requirements for electrical components, and flexibility for different experimental configurations. The project is in the procurement draft stage, with design focused on creating a modular, adaptable distillation system that can support various research needs at the biorefinery facility.

Subject: Process Design Basis – FEL II – IBRF Pilot Plant Revamp – Distillation Column
Unit Operation: Distillation Column
Feed Rate(s): 1.0 BBL/DAY from Hydrotreater of oxygen free C18 Alkanes
Assumptions:
• The unit is designed to operate with a maximum of 1 BPD production, and processing rates are likely to be lower.
• Control valve dP = 25 psi, when it is NOT a pressure control valve
• All electrical components must be NRTL certified. If they are not, they must be field verified.
o If additional cost is necessary to complete this task, please include the cost in the bid.
• One-line drawings are not complete and need to be done as the detailed engineering.
• Relief valve sizing is not complete and is considered a deliverable of detailed engineering.
• It is expected that the bid includes detailed design cost if necessary.
• Standard conditions are 60 deg F and 12 psia on South Table Mountain Campus
• Cooling water supply is available at 24 deg C (approx. 75 deg F) at approximately 50 psig
• BBL/DAY = 42 gal/day
Process Design Basis:
Un-stabilized distillate from the hydrotreater low pressure flash drum is fed to the top of the distillation column. The column has a reboiler on the bottom to supply heat for vaporization. The top of the column has a partial condenser to condense light end hydrocarbons formed in the process. The condenser will also cool the molecules too light to condense at the operating pressure. The overhead receiver can separate vapor, light organic phase and a water phase. The light organic phase can be refluxed back into the tower if necessary. The bottoms product is stabilized distillate for fuel consumption.
A small sump vessel has been added to the distillation column to act as the reboiler. The sump vessel should be mounted at the same elevation as the bottom of the column (bottom tangent lines of the vessels aligned). A two-zone clamshell heater is to be used as the reboiler heat source. The sump is not to be packed, internally.
The internals of the column will be designed so that they can be removed and changed frequently.
The design for the stripper of the hydrotreater used 0.16” 316 SS random packing and a height equivalent theoretical plate (HETP) of 1 ft per stage. The HETP of the packing will change with each system using this distillation column and will need to be included in the engineering study before each different experiment. The bottoms sump should be sized for a minimum five-minute hold up time. The vessel spec sheet and drawing will reflect the desired sizes. The pressure drop with the current hydrotreater model is approximately 0.2” psig, which is normal for this height of a column.
The overhead condenser is sized using the pilot plant cooling water supply of 75 deg F and 50 psig.
The overhead receiver should be sized for five minutes of holdup and surge time at a minimum. The vessel may be larger to accommodate the instrumentation needed for level and pressure control.
The vessel specification sheet and vessel drawing will reflect the needed dimensions. The organic level indication is to be a dP level and the water boot level is to be a float level that is top mounted.
The stripper bottoms stream is stabilized distillate that can be used as a finished product or proceed downstream to an isomerization unit if necessary. The bottoms stream will need to be cooled with an air cooler and trim cooler. The air cooler hot air is to be vented outdoors and will be fed into a header provided within the pilot plant.
The distillation column operating pressure is 20 psig. The maximum allowable pressure of this equipment will be 150 psig for the tower, condenser, and overhead receiver. The bottoms temperature does reach 685 deg F to vaporize the distillate for mass transfer. If the bottoms product is temperature sensitive and cannot be as high as 685 deg F, the distillation column will be rated for full vacuum, and a vacuum pump or ejector could be added to the overhead to accomplish this mode of operation. The P&ID reflects this connection. The ejector or vacuum pump is a separate equipment module, but it would be appropriate to use in tandem with this module.
Another option would be to inject live steam into the bottom of the tower to strip the light end material from the distillate product. This tower design does not currently allow for that capability.
The distillation column mass balance tables reflect the stripping operation necessary for hydroprocessing upstream. There is little to no overhead liquid, hydrocarbon or aqueous. This tower does, however, need to be flexible with operation so that it can make clean cuts and operate with temperature sensitive feeds. The temperature sensitive feeds will need a vacuum system, which is NOT a part of this bid. The tie point to the system is on the P&ID and should be included. The specification sheets for the overhead receiver, reflux and aqueous pumps show more flow than what the mass balance indicates. This is because they are oversized for more reflux if needed, or for a distillation where an aqueous overhead product is present, which is likely. The line lists have two cases per line for the P&ID 2300.D.002 because the stripper has very little flow, and when reflux is necessary, the flow is significantly higher.
This process will need to be controlled via a programmable logic controller (PLC) using a human machine interface (HMI). Currently the facility uses Opto 22 but is open to other hardware options.
Allen Bradley would be the preferred alternate. The facility HMIs are on Dell Computers located within the central control room of the pilot plant.
Additional Considerations
• Additional detailed engineering including but not limited to the following items needs to be included in this bid.
o Details regarding specific equipment selection o Relief valve sizing o Control valve selection o Equipment layout, particularly for taller items and maintenance needs o Rotating equipment selection o Finalized specification sheets o Electrical one-line drawings o Control hardware selection o PHA outcomes
• This package includes:
instrumentation specification sheets vessel specification sheets heat exchanger specification sheets pump and compressor specification sheets blower specification sheet piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) heat and material balance equipment lists instrumentation list o The process hazard analysis (PHA/HAZOP) has not been completed on this design.
This will be completed with NLR before construction begins.
• All pumps need to be mounted so that any NPSH requirements are met at start up conditions – meaning low to no levels.
• Maintenance access is required for rotating equipment and reactors. Cooling water exchangers need to be able to be removed periodically for cleaning.
• The equipment may be mounted on multiple structures if that helps ease construction. The pilot plant is divided into bays and are approximately 10 ft by 15 ft and 20 – 23 ft tall. The center of the building is taller than the outer perimeter.
• All product tanks are to be provided by the customer, NLR.
