A. All dust caps and plugs shall be installed and the permanently attched fittings shall be covered with cushioning material, A-A-1898, Type I, Class B, and secured in place with tape conforming to ASTM D 5330, Type II. All hose ends shall be sealed with caps and plugs to prevent entry of foreign material. All aluminum components shall be cushioned an secured with tape to hold in place. Cushioning should be of sufficient quantity to completely cover all aluminum surfaces.

B. The tank and berm liner are packed in separate crates. These crates are the Level A shipping containers.

C. The tank crate will be a modified ASTM D7478, Type II, Class 2, Style A (bolted crate, plywood sheathed, skid base). The ventilation requirements in ASTM D7478 are waived. The crate deck shall be made from 2" x 6" lumber and the deck surface shall be lined with 1/8” Masonite. The deck shall be supported by 4" x 4" beams and the beams have 4" x 4" rubbing strips. The rubbing strips shall be attached to the beams with carriage bolts. The carriage bolts shall be countersunk to prevent them from extending beyond the wood. The rubbing strips shall be beveled full depth at the angle of 45 degrees at the sling and forklift openings. The crate base allows for 4-way fork lift entry. The sides and tops are constructed with 1/8" Masonite on the interior then 2" x 4" lumber and then 3/4" plywood exterior. The 2” x 4” lumber framework between the plywood and Masonite shall be designed to adequately support the Masonite. The Masonite shall be fastened to the 2” x 4” lumber using fine threaded drywall screws (countersunk) and a panel adhesive. Maximum external dimensions for the tank crate are:

114.25" x 84.25" x 54.375". Wrap entire tank with a sheet of MIL-PRF-131, Class 3 material and then heat seal the material forming a bag around the tank. Remove as much air as possible from the bag before heat sealing.

Lifting slings (if used) will be on the outside of the bagged tank. Secure bagged tank to skid base but do not subject the bagged tank to the hazards of any sharp metal objects.

D. Place cushioned tank accessories listed on page 2 in an appropriately sized weather resistant corrugated box.

Once filled, wrap entire corrugated box with a sheet of MIL-PRF-131, Class 3 material and then heat seal the material forming a bag around the box.-Remove as much air as possible from the bag before heat sealing. Label the bagged box “TANK ACCESSORIES” and place inside tank crate on top of the bagged tank.

E. The berm liner crate shall be constructed in the same manner as the tank crate described in paragraph C, except that the maximum external dimensions for the berm liner crate are: 114.25" x 84.25" x 23.75". Wrap entire berm liner with a sheet of MIL-PRF-131, Class 3 material and then heat seal the material forming a bag around the berm liner. Remove as much air as possible from the bag before heat sealing. Lifting slings (if used) will be on the outside of the bagged berm liner. Secure bagged berm liner to skid base but do not subject the bagged berm liner to the hazards of any sharp metal objects.

F. Place cushioned berm liner accessories listed below in an appropriately sized weather resistant corrugated box.

Once filled, wrap entire corrugated box with a sheet of MIL-PRF-131, Class 3 material and then heat seal the material forming a bag around the box.-Remove as much air as possible from the bag before heat sealing. Label the bagged box “BERM LINER ACCESSORIES” and place inside berm liner crate on top of the bagged berm liner.

G. For bolt application, holes shall be prebored to receive carriage bolts and shall be the exact diameter of the bolt.

The lead holes for lag bolts shall be the same diameter as the shank. Lag bolts shall be placed by being turned in the holes the full length of the bolt and shall not be driven in with a hammer or by any similar means. A flat washer shall be used under the head of each lag bolt and under the nut of each carriage bolt. Carriage bolts shall be countersunk to the depth of the head of the bolt and washer.

H. When stacked the berm liner and tank crate will have a combined height not exceeding 78.125".

I. Mark crates per MIL-STD-129, including Shelf Life data. The crates will be marked "1 of 2" and "2 of 2".
