SUMMARY OF WORK

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Fox Point Hurricane Barrier was constructed between 1960 and 1966 to protect the low-lying downtown area of the city of Providence from damaging storm surge and floods associated with hurricanes and other major storm events. Construction of the barrier was authorized in 1958 after two hurricanes, one in 1938 and one in 1954, caused significant damage and loss of life in Providence. The barrier spans the Providence River, and consists of five main parts: river gates, rock and earthen dikes along each shore, vehicular gates along each shore where roads pass through the dikes, a pumping station to control the flow of water, and canal gates at the west end of the barrier.

The two canal gates control water used to cool the nearby Manchester Street Power Station, which is operated by Dominion Resources. The canals extend through the pump station, and are controlled by two lift gates. During normal times, the gates are lifted above the canals, and rest in the gate wells contained within the pumping station. The gates are lowered during times of exceptionally high tides or storms in order to prevent storm surges from flooding downtown Providence.

1.2 WORK COVERED BY CONTRACT DOCUMENTS

The general description below is given to indicate the approximate scope of this project only. It does not limit the work required under the project drawings and specifications.

The work to be performed under this contract consists of providing the labor, equipment, and materials to remove two existing three-phase Power Transformers A and B; provide two new transformers (A and B) and new connections to same; remove section of existing sheet metal bus enclosure between transformer and transition piece and replace with new. Refer to photo pages at the end of this specification for detail. Provide new 15 kV group-operated primary switches; provide new protection, control, and annunciation wiring and all the necessary auxiliary systems and ancillary equipment required to install the equipment at the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier to make it fully operational.

Removal of existing transformers and primary switches and installation of new transformers and primary switches shall be via a barge with a crane.

For power shut down, coordinate with National Grid. Work can only happen on one side, "A" or "B" at a time. Coordinate with the manufacturer of the switch for the exact mounting height of the new primary terminations in the new switch. Primary conduct heights are fixed and cannot be modified.

When the first side is complete and fully test and accepted by the government then work can commence on the other side.

The work includes electrical work and all other related work including, but

SECTION 01 11 00 Page 3 not limited to, the following:
