About this file
The document is a presentation slide deck for the Walnut Lake #1 Pump Station Corrective Action Plan Phase #2 project, prepared by the Water Resources Commissioner (WRC) of Oakland County, Michigan. The presentation outlines a complex sewer infrastructure rehabilitation project involving the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) and Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD). The project involves hand-mining horseshoe tunnels to install new sewer lines with varying diameters (54-inch, 78-inch, and 96-inch), replacing existing sewer infrastructure, and modifying several critical chambers including the Junction Chamber, Meter Chamber, and Riser Chamber.
The project scope includes detailed technical processes such as debris removal, temporary sewer lining, tunneling operations, installing new steel gates, and abandoning existing sewer lines by grouting. The tunneling will be performed using hand-mining techniques above existing sewer lines, with tunnel diameters ranging from 8.5 to 10 feet depending on the pipe size. The project involves precise engineering modifications, including structural, electrical, and telemetry component updates across multiple chambers and manholes. The work is scheduled for June 2025 and represents a significant infrastructure improvement for the Walnut Lake area, focusing on enhancing sewer system reliability and capacity.

Chamber
• To accommodate tunneling, existing structures except SOT140002 are to have all equipment, walls, floors, and roofs removed (SOT140002 equipment will remain until the new sewer is put into service).
• Following demolition, steel bracing is to be installed in all existing structures prior to tunneling.
• An investigation into what backfill is outside of structures to take place prior to tunneling.
Debris Removal and Temporary Sewer Lining
Debris Removal
Temporary Sewer Lining
• After debris removal, sewer to be temporarily lined with 54” FRPMP or braced with steel box beams within C-channels mounted to the pipe at springline. FRPMP to be pulled or carried in. No jacking of pipe to be allowed.
• Following temporary sewer work, the existing structures are to have concrete working platforms poured to assist with tunneling operations.
Tunneling and New Sewer Line
Tunnel Reaches
• Horseshoe tunnels for new sewers are to be hand-mined above the existing sewers connecting existing structures MH SOT140007, Junction Chamber, Meter Chamber, Riser Chamber, and MH SOT140002.
• 8.5-foot diameter horseshoe tunnels will be mined for 54-inch I.D. and 78-inch I.D. pipe installation, and 10-foot diameter horseshoe tunnels will be mined for 96-inch I.D. pipe installation.
Permanent Sewer Line Following hand-mining operations, FRPMP is to be grouted into place within the tunnels to complete the permanent sewer installation.
Linings to be pulled or carried in. No jacking of pipe to be allowed.
Meter Chamber Gate
Meter Chamber Gate
The Meter Chamber is to have a new steel gate installed following tunneling operations.
Abandon Existing Sewer Lines
Abandonment Existing sewers highlighted will be abandoned with grout after completion of drop connection and new sewer line.
