H Sand Washing Procedure

New sand has a certain amount of fine material that must be washed out before the filter is put in operation. Use the following procedure:

1. Check that all removable weir plates are out of the slot in the reject compartment.

2. Start a supply of clean water to the filter. It is essential that enough flow is supplied to provide the reject flow given in Section 3.4.C. Do not provide less than this amount for each filter. It may be possible to use the water, which the filter is intended to treat if the solids concentration is low, but clean potable water is preferable. The water may be supplied by hose to the top of the unit or through the feed piping.

3. Start the air supply to the airlift at the rate given in Section 3.4.B This will start pumping sand to the top of the airlift. If the airlift does not pump sand, see Section 3.7.C. The fine material will be cleaned from the sand by the reject water flow.

4. Sand washing will require at least 6 to 12 hours. Check that sand is being pumped and that water is running over the reject weir during this time. The sand will be clean when the reject water is no longer cloudy.

5. Some of the fine material will settle out in the reject compartment where it will build up. At the end of the sand washing procedure swirl the water around in the reject compartment by hand so that this material is carried out over the reject weir.

3.3 Pre-Startup Check

Before start-up the following components should be checked and tested separately.

The filter cannot be started up nor operated until ALL of the ancillary equipment is fully operational. All pumps handling feed, reject and filtrate flows must be up and running. The air supply must be connected. Any chemical pretreatment equipment should be on-line and a supply of chemicals should be available.

It is not possible to do a meaningful start-up unless the filter is fully configured for normal operation.
