D. Sand Removal, Replacement and Changing
DynaSand® Filters require very particular characteristics for the sand used. Few sand suppliers can provide this type of sand. Specifically, the sand size and size distribution are important for the required degree of filtration. If it ever becomes necessary to change the sand in your filter, do not be tempted to use sand other than ones recommended by Parkson Corporation. See Section 3.2.G.9.
1. Sand can most easily be removed from the filter by letting the airlift pump do all the work. The filter should be kept full of water by running a hose into the top. A PVC pipe assembly should be made up, one end of which will fit into the top of the airlift. Use Schedule 40 1-1/4” pipe. One wrap of duct tape or electrical tape around the end that fits into the top of the airlift will make a good seal.
Figure 8 shows how to use this pipe.
To speed up sand pumping, an additional sand pump can be made up as in Figure 9. Tie a line around the pipe to prevent it from becoming buried too deeply in the sand.
If the sand is eventually to be replaced in the unit then pump it into bags or drums that can later be lifted to the top of the filter to re-install the sand. Remember that the airlift pump cannot pump much higher than the surface of the water, so keep the pipe assembly low. If you have multiple filters, sand can be pumped over into the other filters and then pumped back using their airlifts. It might be possible to pump sand back up to the filter using a rotary pump that keeps water moving quickly enough to keep the sand in suspension.
The hoses must be kept free of kinks. Diaphragm slurry pumps that work with concrete will not work with sand.
2. To replace sand in the unit, see Section 3.2.G
