About this file
This is a policy document establishing public information and media access procedures for the Suffolk County Jail under Massachusetts General Law. The policy, effective January 2015, designates the Director of External Affairs as the primary liaison for managing all external communications, information requests, and media access. The Department commits to responding promptly and fully to information requests from governmental officials, the general public, and media representatives in compliance with state and federal public record laws, including the Freedom of Information Act under MGL c. 66 § 10 and MGL c. 4 § 7(26). All public records requests must be directed to the General Counsel at the Suffolk County Jail, 200 Nashua Street, Boston, MA 02114, with contact information provided for phone (617-704-6665) and fax (617-704-6688). Media representatives seeking information or facility access must contact the Director of External Affairs at (617) 704-6750 and complete a media visit form agreeing to abide by Department regulations.
The policy establishes strict confidentiality protocols prohibiting the release of Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI), personnel files and employment information, medical records, investigative data, facility security blueprints and structural information, and internal rules affecting security and penal operations. Employee information releases are limited to name, job title, salary, and employment dates. The Department may issue periodic press releases, newsletters, media kits, and brochures through the Director of External Affairs to inform the public about Department operations and crime prevention. During emergency situations including hostage incidents or riots, the Department reserves the right to limit media coverage to ensure safety, with designated briefing areas staffed by the Director of External Affairs and designees to provide information as it becomes available without compromising operational security.
