About this file

This is an Administrative Management Policy document issued by the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department establishing protocols for public information and media access to Department facilities and operations. The policy, effective January 2015, designates a Director of External Affairs to manage a comprehensive public information program consistent with state and federal public record laws, including the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Massachusetts General Law Chapter 66, Section 10. The Department establishes procedures for processing information requests from governmental officials, the general public, and media representatives, with all FOIA and public records requests directed to the General Counsel at the Suffolk County Jail, 200 Nashua Street, Boston, MA 02114 (617-704-6665 phone; 617-704-6688 fax). Media representatives seeking information or facility access must contact the Director of External Affairs at (617) 704-6750 and must complete media visit forms while agreeing to comply with Department rules and regulations.

The policy prohibits the release of specific categories of confidential information, including Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI), personnel files and employment records, medical information regarding inmates and staff, investigative records, facility security blueprints and structural information, and internal rules and practices that would compromise security. Employee information that may be released is limited to name, job title, salary, and employment dates. The Department will issue periodic press releases, produce newsletters and media kits, and may publish brochures on public safety and crime prevention. During emergency situations such as hostage incidents or riots, the Department reserves the right to limit media coverage to ensure safety and security, with the Director of External Affairs providing briefings from a designated staging area as information becomes available.
