About this file
This document provides details for a federal contract opportunity to prepare site for nuclear medicine support space at a Veterans Affairs medical center. The Department of Veterans Affairs, through its Southern Arizona Veterans Affairs Healthcare System network contracting office, intends to solicit fixed-price bids to provide construction services at the New Mexico VA Health Care System in Albuquerque. Work will include demolition, site preparation, and modifications to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, IT, fire suppression systems, and architectural renovation of existing rooms for new counters and cabinetry. The solicitation will be set aside for Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Businesses and released on July 20, 2020. Bids will be evaluated based on low price, and the contract awarded for a period of performance within 272 calendar days of the notice to proceed. The magnitude of the project is estimated between $100,000 to $250,000 under NAICS code 236220.

Discussion
In general, calculated shielding is often overestimated due to assumptions on workload, use factors and occupancy factors. I have attempted to provide more realistic factors based on information from the facility and modified occupancy estimates. The workload is set high enough to allow for any minor increases without requiring further shielding.
Radiation protection is based on three concepts: time, distance, and shielding. All three are used to maintain radiation exposures in the workplace at or below safe levels. The maximum weekly exposure currently allowed for occupationally exposed workers is 100 millirem (controlled areas) and for non-occupationally exposed workers (uncontrolled areas) is 2 millirem. Therefore to apply the ALARA concept, shielding design exposure limits are 100 uR/week for controlled areas and 20 uR/week for uncontrolled areas.
All lead sheeting should extend to a height of at least 7 feet above floor level. Nail heads do not need to be overlapped. Overlying drywall seams should be offset and great care should be exercised in taping and plastering the seams. No gaps or holes in drywall are acceptable.
