1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Purpose

To provide instructions for inspection and repair of the MSA MM2K Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) and the MSA Ultravue facepiece.

1.2 Scope

This procedure applies to the inspection and repair of air purifying MSA MM2K PAPR and the MSA Ultravue facepiece in the Respiratory Equipment Facility (REF) by personnel who are authorized to perform these inspections and repairs.

This is a Reference procedure. The user is not required to have this procedure present while performing the activity.

The following data/round sheets may be utilized in the performance of this procedure:

OSR 4-510, Respiratory Equipment Record and QA Form.

2.0 GENERAL INFORMATION

2.1 Responsibilities

1. The REF Lead is responsible for:

Evaluating results of OSR 4-510 to determine if significant defective items are reported and notifying the Respiratory Protection Program Administrator (RPPA) and Cognizant Quality Function (CQF)

Initiating and responding to Nonconformance reports (NCR) in accordance with Manual 1Q, Procedure 15-1, Control of Nonconforming Items

Defining acceptable condition of rust or discoloration on respirator parts.

2. Respiratory Equipment Facility Personnel are responsible for:

Performing respirator inspections and repairs (excluding the SRS Fire Department respirators)

Completing qualification training as specified in the Job Performance Standard or approved equivalent

Tracking quantity of products inspected, defective, repaired, rejected and new products put in service

Recording information daily on OSR 4-510.

3. The Respiratory Protection Program Administrator (RPPA) is responsible for:

Approving the release of respirators offsite

Responding to issues where significant defects are found.

2.2 Information

1. Respirator equipment is worn by workers for protection against airborne hazardous materials and must be maintained in like-new condition to ensure maximum respiratory protection.

2. REF personnel repair air purifying and air supplied respiratory equipment at Building 705-C.

3. Cartridges marked New Cartridge (NC) should be disposed of at the job site.

Any cartridges returned to the REF marked NC are not to be reused and should be returned to the laundry for proper disposal.

4. Medium respirator nosecups are used in small respirators. Medium and large respirator nosecups are used in medium and large respirators.

5. MSA Ultravue MM2K PAPR are available in the following materials and sizes.

Material Description

Silicone

Size: Small, Medium, and Large Size is indicated on a tab inside the lens at the bottom of the lens as well as the color of the lens ring.

Small – Gray lens ring Medium – Black lens ring Large – Gold lens ring Silicone designation on the black colored MSA Ultravue respirator is located above the lens, immediately beneath the MSA logo.

2.2.1 Respiratory Equipment Repair Requirements

CAUTION

The use of substitute parts or altering the respirators voids NIOSH certification.

1. Perform respirator repairs using trained and qualified persons.

2. Repair faulty respirators and inspect all components in accordance with this procedure so that the devices are returned to a like-new condition.

3. Maintain National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) certification of respirators by only using approved spare parts from the manufacturer of the respirator being repaired.

Page: 3 of 25

2.2.2 Respirators That Cannot Be Repaired

1. Remove respirator from Respiratory Issuance Tracking System (RITS) database.

2. Disassemble MSA Ultravue Respirators that cannot be repaired for needed reusable parts.

3. Store all needed reusable parts for future use.

4. Discard all unneeded and unserviceable parts, including facepieces, in the designated waste container.

2.2.3 Inspection of Unopened Expired Respirators

Respirators returned to the REF unopened and expired will be disassembled and inspected following all steps outlined in this procedure.

2.2.4 Respirators for Offsite Use

Respiratory Protection Program Administrator (RPPA) approval is required to release respirators offsite.

1. Use new respirators only for offsite training, demonstrations, etc.

2. Return these respirators to the Respirator Equipment Facility for cleaning, sanitizing, and processing.

A. If circumstances require recycled respirators to be used offsite for a similar purpose, then contact Radiological Protection Department to perform an unrestricted use survey before release.

2.2.5 MM2K PAPR Description

1. Certified by NIOSH, the OptimAir MM2K PAPR consists of the following components:

motor/blower battery support belt charger with cable power cable facepiece cartridge sparkguard cover for cutting, grinding and welding (upon request only) cartridge cartridge thread sleeve (upon request only)

Page: 4 of 25

2.2.5 MM2K PAPR Description, (cont.)

2. The OptimAir MM2K PAPR uses a mask mounted motor/blower to draw air through a cartridge, which removes the particulate contaminant, and provides a constant flow of respirable air directly to the facepiece. The MM2K PAPR is available with High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) cartridge only. The REF will be servicing the motor/blower, facepiece and cartridge. The operating facility will be responsible for servicing the battery, support belt, charger with cable, and power cable. The REF may service all components, if requested.

2.2.6 MM2K PAPR Battery

1. The OptimAir MM2K PAPR uses a nickel metal hydride battery (see Figure 8.3). The battery is encased in a hard plastic case and is water resistant and is designed for easy shower decontamination. The ON/OFF toggle switch is located on the top of the battery. There are loops on the back of the battery case for mounting onto a belt. The battery is charged with a dual rate smart charger.

2. The battery should be stored in temperature range between 50 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit when not in use.

3. The MM2K PAPR battery charger, shown as Figure 8.3, uses one light-emitting diode (LED). When the battery is charging, the LED will be Red.

The battery can stay connected to the charger until it is needed.

3.0 PRECAUTIONS AND LIMITATIONS

3.1 Safety

1. When using hand tools such as a screwdriver, a leather or puncture resistant glove shall be worn on the hand opposite of the hand holding the tool.

2. The use of substitute parts or altering the respirators voids NIOSH certification. Approved spare parts from the manufacturer of the respirator being repaired must be used to maintain NIOSH certification of respirators.

3. Do not use compressed air for cleaning purposes except where reduced to 30 pounds per square inch gage (psig) or less and appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) is used. Never use compressed air to remove dust or other residue from an employee's body or to blow down an employee’s clothing.

4. Safety glasses with side shields are required when using airblow gun.

5. Read and obey all shop safety postings.

6. When handling material, wear proper PPE as required.

7. Review proper lifting techniques outlined in Manual 8Q, Procedure 12, General Site Safety Requirements.

8. Additional hazard analysis may be required to ensure that facility/job specific hazards are identified and that the appropriate actions are taken to eliminate/mitigate the identified hazard(s).
