Type-Class: Tech-Ref Page: 1 of 6
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose
To provide instructions for operating the respirator washer at the Satellite Respiratory Equipment Facility (SREF) located in the 766-H Training Facility and at the Respiratory Equipment Facility (REF) located in Building 705-C.
1.2 Scope
This procedure applies to the use of the respirator washer in the REF and SREF when washing and sanitizing respirator equipment.
This is a Reference procedure. The user is not required to have this procedure present while performing the activity.
2.0 GENERAL INFORMATION
2.1 Definitions and Abbreviations
GPM - gallons per minute
MSA - Mine Safety Appliance
SDS – Safety Data Sheet
2.2 Responsibilities
1. REF Personnel are responsible for:
Operating the respirator washer
Completing qualification training as specified in the Job Performance Standard or approved equal prior to performing this procedure.
2.3 Equipment Description
1. The washer is front-loading and automatic. A revolving wash arm sprays the wash and rinse solutions. A 45-gpm capacity pump circulates the wash and rinse solutions, and empties the solutions during the drain cycles. The water temperature entering the washer should not be greater than 120°F. The total time for a complete cycle is 4-1/2 minutes. Special rack(s) are used to hold respirators in the washer.
2. The manufacturer’s recommendation is not to exceed 120°F. This is achieved by setting thermostat on the hot water heater to 120°F and running the water in the sink until it is hot. The temperature on the front of the washer should not read greater than noted temperature and no additional checks are necessary.
