About this file

This is a zone map of the Canadian Forces North Warning System (NWS), a military radar and defense infrastructure system covering northern Canada. The map displays five operational zones (Zones 1-5) across the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, with Zone 1 positioned in the western Arctic, Zone 2 in the central Arctic, Zone 3 in the eastern Arctic, Zone 4 along the eastern coast, and Zone 5 in the far eastern region.

The system includes multiple types of facilities marked throughout the zones: Short Range Radar Sites (SRRS) indicated by orange circles, Long Range Radar Sites (LRRS) shown as red squares, Logistics Support Sites (LSS) marked with blue triangles, Distant Early Warning facilities indicated by ring symbols, and Environmental Remediation Sites. The infrastructure is distributed across major Canadian territories and northern regions, with facilities concentrated along strategic coastal areas and inland positions to provide comprehensive surveillance coverage of Canadian airspace and maritime approaches. The map was produced in 2010 by the Professional and Technical Services division under the Department of National Defence and is maintained by Public Works and Government Services Canada.
