Based on these restrictions, is it the intent to only perform work between November 1 5th and January 1 5th of each year? Will work in the water be allowed behind the cofferdam outside of the limits listed above? If so, will cofferdam installation and removal be limited to November 15th - January 15th ofeach year? Typical ACOE general permits allow for installation of cofferdams outside ofany in-water work restriction dates.
o Answer #2: Work is not limited as summarized in the question. Although silt producing in-water work is not allowed between January 15th - June 30th and
Addendum #5 Page 2
September 1st - November 15th ofeach year, work in the water behind cofferdams is allowed between January 15th - June 30th and September 1st - November 1 5th of each year. Prior to any pile installation operations, the Contractor shall submit for review and approval ofthe Engineerl\4assDOT a schedule of the proposed methods and equipment for all installation procedures, including the driven required capacity initially based upon a WEAP analysis.
As depicted in the Geotechnical Report, a Static - Cyclic (Express) Load Test (ltem 948.31) and a Dynamic Load Test by Contractor (ltem948.4l) shall be performed on a sacrificial pile prior to ordering of production piles. As identified on the boring logs in the plans, the piles shall be driven through the loose Fine Sand layer to the required capacity initially based upon the results from the Static and PDA tests on the sacrificial pile. It is recommended that the Contractor provide extra pile length to account for any variations ofthe actual pile tip elevations in the field. Any differences in pile lengths are to be resolved during construction, under the supervision of the Engineer and/or MassDOT. The sacrificial pile shall be located at a minimum of5 feet but preferably not greater than l5 feet away from the nearest production pile. It is recommended that the sacrificial pile be located at the southwest comer ofthe bridge. Additional Dynamic Load Testing shall be conducted on 2 (two) production piles, one at each abutment. Per the Geotechnical Report, one Dynamic load test on a production pile shall be at the opposite end ofthe sacrificial pile, meaning that the tested production pile is located at the northeast comer ofthe abutment. It is also required to conduct 2 (two) Dynamic load tests on the temporary pedestrian bridge piles, one at each abutment. ln summary, a total of 5
