In the past three years, I have completed 284 projects total.

94 of those projects were for 14 clients, including Oregon Parks and Recreation, The Oregon Zoo Foundation, Coalition of Oregon Land Trusts, Columbia Land Trust, Harper's Playground, Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU), Oregon Anesthesiologists Group, National Parks Conservation Association, Bradley Angle, and Hillsboro Medical Center. My expertise lies with Pacific Northwest based clients working in the environmental, educational, health care, and non-profit areas. Subject matter for these projects included logo and brand design, event branding, presentations, annual reports, interpretive signs, park maps, posters, and flyers.

The remaining 190 projects were completed for a single client, Adventist Health Portland. I am the senior graphic designer for this client, on a contract basis, and work closely with their marketing and communications director (Heather Pease, listed as a reference in Exhibit A-2). Projects completed for Adventist Health Portland include print and digital advertisements, murals for the Family Birth Place and the Garden Café, educational booklets about subjects such as childbirth and cancer care, brochures for various departments, guides for hospital visitors, maps and wayfinding for the hospital complex, specialty referral guides for providers, and many more. My work varies weekly and I provide high quality design with quick deadlines to various providers and specialty offices within the Adventist Health Portland system.

Req. ID 1 284 projects have been completed in the past 3 years. 94 of those projects were for 14 clients. The remaining 190 projects were completed for Adventist Health Portland. All projects were completed at budget. It is my responsibility to accurately predict the cost of the work provided, so that clients may prepare accordingly.

Req. ID 2 Key Personnel 1: Cassandra Thompson, Owner, Ocelot Creative Years of Experience: 15 years

Broadly speaking, I specialize in design for human-service organizations. I create an emotional connection through design, persuading your audience to care, to remember, to adapt their behavior.

My professional experience spans traditional and digital media, with the skills and flexibility to combine many types of creative work. My passion and area of specialization is print design. I hold a BFA in Communication Design from Pacific Northwest College of Art, and have 15 years of experience designing presentations, newsletters, invitations, reports, interpretive signs, flyers, and maps.

I partner with organizations to build their brand framework, as well as design within existing brand systems. Focusing on consistent, strong design that reflects the essence of the organization, I guide clients in the best design practices for their audience, while upholding and strengthening the integrity of their brand.

In additional to creative design work, communication with clients is vital to ensure work is well-planned, documented, and archived. When projects conclude, press-ready packaged files are provided to all vendors via a download link from secure cloud storage, or in the preferred client format. All technical requirements from third party vendors are planned for, communicated and completed at every stage of the project.

Press checks and proofing are a vital part of ensuring the quality of the final piece and I fully participate in the coordination of this process.

Client: Columbia Land Trust

Columbia Land Trust works to protect and restore land in the Pacific Northwest. Ocelot was asked to design a series of large interpretive signs along a 7-mile stretch of the Klickitat River floodplain area. Options were provided for design services within the overall budget. Quotes were sourced from multiple vendors for physical production of the signs, to ensure the project would stay within budget. After design was complete, Ocelot was in charge of coordinating the printing, proofing, and fabrication process, as well as shipping the signs and hardware to the site from an out of state vendor.

Project goals: Ocelot was given a large amount of information about the trail and Columbia Land Trust’s restoration project. I worked with the client to identify their goals and how to achieve them with the sign design and placement. Together, we decided on 4 signs, covering history of the area, reasons for restoration, explanation of riparian areas impacted by restoration, and comparison of the area before and after restoration.

Design Considerations

Stakeholders: The Klickitat river offers important opportunities in forestry, ranching, and recreation, and is rich in history and culture of the Klickitat people. Tribal leaders were consulted in the creation of the content, providing important context for the long history of the area.

Branding: The use of brand fonts and color palette helped identify these signs (and the restoration project overall) as the work of the Columbia Land Trust. Bold headlines posed as questions, a subtle topographic textured background and repeated use of a curved background header tied the signs together as a series.

Environment: The signs are most likely to be viewed from a distance by hikers eager to continue on the trail. The goal was to quickly inform visitors giving a short glance, while also presenting more of the story to those wanting a deeper understanding. The physical durability of the signs in extreme weather conditions over many years also required consideration when choosing materials and manufacturers.

The Signs:

Sign #1 is the largest sign (48” x 36”) is posted at both ends of the trail. It introduces the area and shows a timeline of events leading up to the new restoration.

Sign #2 points out multiple features along the river, and describes how the removal of the road allowed habitats in these areas to flourish.

Sign #3 answers the question of why the project was necessary. Large photos with graphic callouts, highlighted statistics (“8 miles of road removed”) and thoughtfully edited content quickly informs visitors giving a short glance, while also presenting more of the story to those wanting a deeper understanding.

Sign #4 compares the previous landscape to the current, and informs visitors with a map of the entire restoration area. It also warns that there is no road or trail beyond this point, and hazards may emerge.

Conclusion: The project was successfully completed on time and at budget. The client was pleased and has remarked on how well the signs were received in the community. Multiple clients have contacted me after seeing the signs, requesting similar design work.
