About this file
This notice provides details on a pre-solicitation for a federal contract opportunity with NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center. NASA/AFRC intends to award multiple contracts to develop, test, and demonstrate a megawatt-class electrified powertrain flight system. The demonstration aims to retire technical and integration risks for megawatt-class electric aircraft propulsion, identify regulations and standards gaps, and perform overlapping simulation, ground, and flight tests. Offerors should monitor the Federal Business Opportunity website for any potential release of a request for proposal. The solicitation number is 80AFRC21R0009. Technical performance measures include a minimum total power level of 500kW, 250kW for electrical components, 500V operating voltage, 15,000ft altitude capability, and 0.5kW/kg specific power.

Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center (NASA/AFRC) intends to solicit and award multiple contracts for the "Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration" for the successful development, ground test, and flight test of a MW-class Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration system which is relevant to a large market and will:
• Retire barrier technical and integration risks associated with MW-class Electrified Aircraft Propulsion (EAP) systems, utilizing industry and/or NASA ground and flight test assets.
• Flight demonstrate a MW-class EAP system that meets the following technical performance measures:
Technical Performance Measures (TPMs) Full Success Minimum Total power level of hybrid electric power
1.5MW 500kW
Power level of electrical components 1MW 250kW
Operating voltage of integrated system 1000V 500V
Altitude capability of integrated system >30,000 ft. >15,000ft
Specific power of integrated electrical power
1.25 kW/kg 0.5 kW/kg
End to end loss of integrated electrical power
20% 25%
Environmental / airworthiness Flight test Flight test
• Identify overlapping opportunities to mature an integrated MW-class electric powertrain system and address high-priority regulations and standards gaps with relevant data.
Identify the highest priority competitive and pre-competitive MW-class EAP regulations and standards gaps and recommended means-of-compliance that will inform the development of regulations and standards.
Identify and perform overlapping simulation, ground-and-flight tests of the technology development efforts proposed that also address the means-of-compliance gaps for the identified highest priority gaps in the current regulations applicable for the technology in Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) .
This notice is not a Request for Proposal (RFP). Potential Offerors should monitor the Federal Business Opportunity website for any changes or the potential release of an RFP.
Oral communications are not acceptable in response to this notice.
