1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose
This Statement of Work (SOW) defines those tasks necessary to design, analyze, develop, fabricate, integrate, test, and evaluate the Wide Field Instrument (WFI) Opto-Mechanical
Assembly (WOMA). In addition, it defines the tasks necessary to support the subsequent integration, test, evaluation, validation, and launch of the WFI, and to supply and maintain the instrument Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and to support the Mission Operations Center
(MOC) through the commissioning phase of the mission.
This SOW will go into more detail describing the tasks that the Contractor shall perform to accomplish the work required during this effort. In this document, a requirement is identified by
“shall,” a good practice by “should,” permission by “may” or “can,” expectation by “will” and descriptive material by “is.
1.2 WFIRST Mission Overview
The Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) is a NASA observatory designed to perform wide-field imaging and slitless spectroscopic surveys of the near infrared (NIR) sky for the community as well as direct imaging of exoplanets and debris disks using a coronagraph.
WFIRST is the top-ranked large space mission in the New Worlds, New Horizon (NWNH)
Decadal Survey of Astronomy and Astrophysics.
1.3 Wide Field Instrument (WFI) Overview
The WFIRST Wide Field Instrument (WFI) consists of two channels: (1) a combination wide field imaging and spectrographic channel – the Wide Field Channel (WFC), and (2) a narrow field spectrographic channel – the Integral Field Channel (IFC). The two channels, with their associated optics, mechanisms, focal plane assemblies (FPAs), and focal plane electronics
(FPEs) are located in the Cold Sensing Module (CSM) beneath the WFIRST Optical Telescope
Assembly (OTA). The CSM includes the Transmissive Optics Selection Assembly (TOSA) for holding and moving the filters and grism, and an alignment compensation mechanism. The CSM also includes the Relative Calibration System (RCS) that provides a calibrated light source for both WFC and IFC. The WFI control and interface electronics are located in the Warm
Electronics Module (WEM) on the spacecraft bus. The two modules with WFI hardware are electrically connected by a harness. Both the WFC and IFC Focal Plane Assemblies (FPA) are thermally connected to a Facility Cryogenic Radiator (FCR) to allow cooling of the detectors to cryogenic levels.
The WFI also provides guide star data to the spacecraft for fine pointing control of the observatory.
1.4 Definitions and Worksplit
Cold Sensing Module – The CSM is the serviceable science module portion of the WFI that is installed into a bay in the WFIRST Instrument Carrier. The CSM includes the WOMA Cold
Module (CM) and all Government Furnished Property (GFP) subsystems and components that are installed into the WOMA CM.
Facility Cryogenic Radiator (FCR) – The large, static radiator attached to the telescope’s Outer
Barrel Assembly (OBA) used to passively cool the WFC FPA detectors and the IFC FPA detectors.
Warm Electronics Module – The electronics boxes and harnesses mounted onto the spacecraft-provided panel that is installed into a bay of the WFIRST Spacecraft Element. The WOMA portion of the WEM is the WOMA Control Electronics (WCE) box(es) that control the TOSA, the alignment mechanism, and the RCS. The GFP portion is the IFC Electronics (IFCE), and the
Instrument Command and Data Handling (ICDH) box that interfaces with the spacecraft electronics, and the harnesses. The panel is GFP provided by the Spacecraft Element.
Wide Field Instrument – The complete Wide Field Instrument is the combination of the Cold
Sensing Module, the WFI electronics boxes and harnesses in the Warm Electronics Module, the harness that electrically connects those two modules, and the Facility Cryogenic Radiator (FCR).
Wide Field Instrument Opto-Mechanical Assembly – The WOMA is a grouping of WFI hardware that will be designed, built, aligned, and tested by the flight contractor. The GFP that will be incorporated into the WOMA to make up the finished WFI is described later in this document.
WOMA Cold Module – The WOMA CM consists of all WOMA hardware in the WFI Cold
Sensing Module: the Cold Module Structure, the Optical Bench, the TOSA, the Alignment
Compensation Mechanism, the RCS, the thermal bus assembly connecting the detectors and the
FCR, and the CSM radiator. The Contractor-supplied harnesses connect from the WOMA
Connector Panel to the WOMA CM components, and from the WOMA Connector Panel to the
CSM thermal hardware. The GFP harnesses are all other harnesses in the CSM and the WEM.
The WOMA CM accommodates several GFP subsystems and components including the WFC
FPA, the IFC, the WFC Focal Plane Electronics (FPE), and the IFC FPE (IFPE). The FPEs operate near room temperature, and are mechanically supported by and thermally controlled by the WOMA CM.
The distribution of WFI subsystems and components between the CSM and WEM and by
WOMA and GFP is shown in the functional block diagram in Figure 1.

Project will take responsibility for WFI integration from this point forward, the WFIRST Project will conduct this review. This is not a formal buyoff of the entire WOMA, since the WOMA does not have a separate environmental test program before GFP integration.
5.2.4.1-H For every subsequent GFP integration, GSFC will hold an Integration
Readiness Review. The purpose of this review is to ensure that both NASA and the Contractor are satisfied that the partially completed WFI assembly and the GFP flight hardware to be integrated are ready for integration.
Integration Readiness Reviews for multiple GFP items can be combined into a single review if mutually agreed upon by NASA and the Contractor.
5.2.4.1-I The Contractor shall implement a system for tracking the status and resolution of Action Items initiated during peer and formal reviews whose status shall be reported at the formal reviews. Wherever possible, these peer reviews should be conducted in accordance with GPR 8700.6C, Engineering
Peer Reviews or the equivalent Contractor standard.
5.2.4.1-J The Contractor shall conduct Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs) at the assembly level prior to the start of each environmental test. A TRR for each planned test or series of tests ensures that the test article
(hardware/software), test facility, support personnel, and test procedures are ready for testing and data acquisition, data reduction, and procedure and data control including configuration management and data storing and archiving.
5.2.4.1-K The Contractor shall conduct Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) reviews for any FPGAs that are either new or modified from a heritage application. FPGA reviews shall be conducted against the design guidelines and development methodology contained in 500-PG-8700.2.7.A Design of
